Frank is happy that Kathryn Frady is back from Florida. She was gone for a month to direct a production of Tosca for Gulfshore Opera. She stayed with her aunt-in-law in Bonita Springs. Kathryn had to wrangle a children’s choir from Punta Gorda.
Kathryn got to sing Tosca’s part during one of the orchestra rehearsals while the set was still being assembled behind her. She said it gave extra meaning to the “Vissi d'arte” (I lived for art) aria.
Kathryn got back in time to sing at the Rossini Festival on Saturday. She was listed as a solo artist but had other Marble City Opera singers join her. Kathryn said she almost invited Frank to join them even though he can’t sing.
Kathryn said someone at the festival told her she heard Frank mention that Kathryn would be singing. Frank admits that he plugged the festival in a manner that it might have sounded like Kathryn was the headliner.
Frank was planting more fig trees on Saturday afternoon. That evening he and his wife Jere attended an ‘80s themed fundraiser party. Their costumes weren’t as outrageous as everyone else’s.
Frank gives Kathryn a “tree cookie” from a maple tree that was in his front yard. Steve’s Tree Service removed two maples and three redbuds.
On the way home from Florida, Kathryn stopped at a truck stop in Georgia called Magnolia Plantation. She took a picture of some ceramic tortoises on the shelf. She bought a jar of fig preserves for Frank.
A few weeks ago Frank bought a packaged Chicago Hardy fig tree at a big home improvement store. He thought it looked dead but planted it in a flower pot anyway. After about three weeks, he took the dead fig twig back to the store and got store credit to buy another one. He saw two more dead ones on the shelf before finding one that had a tiny green leaf. He also noticed they were selling live Brown Turkey fig trees for $16. Kathryn thinks he should start selling fig cuttings.
Frank offered to give a Brown Turkey fig cutting to a church friend he saw in the parking lot. He also offered one to his neighbor, who said he wanted one but didn’t know how to plant it. Frank dug a hole and planted a rooted Brown Turkey cutting in his neighbor’s side yard. He had also previously buried some extra unrooted cuttings in the neighbor’s backyard in case any take root and survive.
