Frank & Friends Show 0061

Frank Murphy’s friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth and her husband David Crawford like to say “Roadhouse” if someone loses their train of thought.
David is an opera singer. Frank appeared with David in the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s Clayton Holiday Concerts in December, 2018. David likes to tease Frank whenever he hears a Billy Joel song on the radio.
Frank has a theory that radio stations around the country are influenced by the playlist of WCBS-FM in New York City, which might play extra Billy Joel songs because he is a New Yorker. Laura Beth likes Billy Joel music even though her husband does not.
David and Laura Beth heard several Billy Joel songs on a Queen-themed online station. Frank asks if she’s seen the unflattering meme comparing a picture of Billy Joel to a photo of Darth Vader without his helmet.
Frank became an Elvis fan years after Elvis died. He produced a live radio broadcast from Graceland on the tenth anniversary of the death of Elvis. Frank and his wife Jere took their grandson Artie Rocket to D&B Hot Dogs to get a “Loaded Elvis Pocket” which was a banana in a hot dog bun with a layer of peanut butter and topped with marshmallow creme, chocolate syrup, and peanuts.
Laura Beth and David like to order a crispy-crust pizza from Little Nicky’s New York Pizza, two doors down from the hot dog restaurant. Frank met the owners of Little Nicky’s several years ago at an ex-New Yorkers meet-up where pizza and Drake’s Cakes were served.
Laura Beth was in a commercial for Drake’s Devil Dogs. Frank likes to buy a box of Devil Dogs when he is close enough to New York to find them. The commercial also featured a guy in a drake costume. A drake is a male duck.
Frank tells Laura Beth about visiting Parrot Mountain for an upcoming See More Smokies Insider Edition episode. Frank and Artie and Kathryn Frady each got to hold three birds. A cockatoo named Tydee wanted to stay on Frank’s shoulder and lick the sweat off his forehead.
After recording two episodes in Pigeon Forge, Frank and Jere needed to take Artie someplace for dinner. They found long waits at The Old Mill Restaurant and at Downtown Flavortown. Laura Beth says the longest she will wait at a restaurant is half an hour. She was baffled by the long lines at the Shake Shack when she was performing on Broadway.
Frank remembered that Junction 35 Spirits has a restaurant attached to its distillery. Frank, Jere, and Artie were seated immediately and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The waiter left a serving pitcher of water on their table, which was extremely helpful.
Frank promised Artie they could roast Marshmallow Peeps after Jere cooked chicken on the smoker. Artie wanted to make s’mores but they didn’t have any candy bars. Frank suggested he could try using chocolate syrup instead. The roasted Peeps have a caramelized sugar shell on the outside and softened marshmallow inside.
Laura Beth and her daughter Lily did a taste-test of flavored Marshmallow Peeps, including cinnamon flavor, which they liked. Frank has tried Peeps-flavored things including a Peeps-flavored Slurpee, which tasted terrible. Frank mentions that former news anchor Kristin Farley enjoys Peeps and posts photos of her favorites.
Frank saw an online ad for a broadcast of a newer production of Rigoletto set in 1920s Europe. The ad had an incorrect photo, showing a production of Rigoletto set in 1960s Las Vegas from season 40 of Great Performances. Laura Beth’s husband David played Ceprano in the Vegas “rat pack” version.

Frank Murphy’s friend Laura Beth Wells is filling in for Kathryn Frady, who is out of town working at Opéra Louisiane. Laura Beth recently starred in Always Patsy Cline at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Patsy became afraid of car rides after a crash in 1961. She started taking a small plane to gigs and died in a plane crash in 1963. Frank saw a microphone Patsy used at WINC radio in Winchester, Virginia.
Frank chatted with Laura Beth when they were both in the audience for the Tennessee Valley Players production of Something Rotten! at the Ula Love Doughty Carousel Theatre, next door to the Clarence Brown Theatre. The Carousel will soon be torn down and rebuilt.
Frank’s cousin Terry Hatton was a legendary FDNY captain. Terry used to visit all the old theatres in Times Square to memorize their floor plans and exits. One time Terry swung from a rope high above Times Square to secure a billboard that was falling. The mayor made a joke about “Captain man-Hatton” being as good as Spider-Man.
Laura Beth played Emily Osborn in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. Laura describes the flying techniques in the show. She says it is still bad luck to whistle in a theatre because in the days before electronic headsets, stagehands would use whistles to signal when to raise or lower curtains and set pieces. If you whistle in a theatre, you could get hit with something from above.
Frank also saw Mary Costa at the production of Something Rotten! Mary is known for providing the voice of Aurora in the animated Sleeping Beauty. Frank and his family sat behind a ten-year-old girl and her family. Frank urged the family to go say hi to Mary Costa before the play started. Mary invited the girl to sit on her lap for a picture.
Frank and Laura Beth knew several people in the Something Rotten! cast, including Jessica Magers-Rankin, who played Bea. Laura Beth was in a cabaret-style show with Jessica. Frank recalls that he attended the show and met Laura Beth for the first time.
Frank once read an article about the short supply of men in community theatre. Laura Beth says the trope extends to high school theatre, with girls auditioning for the lead roles but the theatre teacher pulling a boy out of track & field practice to play the male lead.
Laura Beth liked the minimalist style of the Something Rotten! production. She said that they used simple boxes and chairs as sets in Shakespeare’s day. Frank saw a production of Murder on the Orient Express at Theatre Knoxville Downtown that used benches to represent the parts of the train. Laura Beth knows the students who built the benches.
Frank and his wife took their grandson Artie to the Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge on Saturday. Frank had a conversation with someone from the Oak Ridge seed library. You take seeds to grow vegetables and then harvest your seeds to bring back to the library.
Frank says many of the festival attendees reminded him of people about five to ten years older than him and listened to rock music from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Frank missed out on that era of music because his parents listened to opera and classical music. They also listened to talk radio shows like Rambling with Gambling and The Arlene Francis Show on WOR-AM.
Laura Beth points out that her daughter can access music from all eras on Spotify. Frank’s grandson is similar. Artie’s playlist has classic rock songs, video game songs, and John Williams movie themes.
Laura Beth says the first play that “got hold of her” was Peter Pan. The title role is traditionally played by a woman. Frank and Laura Beth both had the soundtrack of the Peter Pan production starring Mary Martin. Laura Beth used to use the “Stepsisters’ Lament” from Cinderella as her audition song.

Frank Murphy and Kathryn Frady are joined for a few minutes by Frank’s eldest grandson, Artie Rocket. Last summer, Artie appeared on several See More Smokies episodes of the Frank & Friends Show. Artie remembers being scared by a Bigfoot statue in Pigeon Forge. Artie wants to show the scapular he received as a First Communion gift.
Frank had a close call on the wooden deck in his backyard. When he stepped down from one level to the next, his foot broke through a board. Fortunately as he fell, he landed in a sitting position with his leg through the board.
Kathryn’s parents have algae in their pool. Frank has been fighting algae with extra chlorine. Last year he tried algaecide but didn’t like the suds created by the chemical. Frank switched to liquid chlorine when the price of chlorine tablets skyrocketed. He likes to open the jug underwater so it doesn’t splash on his clothes.
When Frank was a kid, he and other kids had to step into a dishpan of liquid chlorine before getting into the kiddie pool at the club. The chemical killed athlete’s foot fungus.
Kathryn says it seems like every time she calls her coworker Brandon Gibson, he is washing the dishes. Kathryn suggests listening to podcasts while doing the dishes.
Frank was moved to the afternoon shift on 104.9 Lake FM. He is now on from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Listen online at https://www.lakefm.com/
Frank’s mother was in labor for 30 hours on the longest day of the year before giving birth to him. He likes to joke that Judy Garland ruined his birthday by dying.
Frank bought dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets, pool floats, and other treats for the kids at ALDI. As he approached the checkout line, the customer ahead of him asked, “Are you on PBS?” As Frank conversed with the customer, the ALDI cashier left her register to walk around and unload Frank’s cart and ring up his purchases.
Later that day, Frank was buying produce at Kroger. A produce clerk asked if Frank was still on the radio and still doing improv on stage. Another customer overheard the conversation and approached Frank. The customer said that he’s been told he has a great voice and should be on the radio. Frank agreed and offered to help him contact the local radio stations.
Kathryn is headed out of town to work at Opéra Louisiane and at Coastal Carolina University. She will be back for an August 3 screening of Marble City Opera’s production of Tosca at Central Cinema. The video is hosted by Frank and Kathryn. They introduce each act and give a synopsis of the plot.

Frank Murphy welcomes Kathryn Frady back from her vacation. Frank is concerned that they have 665 YouTube subscribers and he hopes they will get well past 667 subscribers quickly.
Frank enjoyed Kathryn’s performance as Julia Lowell in Marble City Opera’s production of The Copper Queen. You can rent a video stream of the opera at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
Frank surprised Kathryn by giving her a congratulatory hug after opening night of The Copper Queen. Frank sat behind Mary Costa, an opera singer who was the voice of Aurora in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Reviewer Alan Sherrod of Arts Knoxville called the show “operatic gold.”
Kathryn feels depressed when a show ends, especially when she is involved as both singer and producer. Kathryn just became the General Director of Opéra Louisiane in addition to her job at Marble City Opera. Frank has started lining up guest co-hosts for when Kathryn will be in Baton Rouge.
Frank used to buy 40 pounds of chlorine tablets for about $80. A problem at the factory caused a shortage and a price increase to about $200. Frank switched to liquid chlorine, which he could get for about $6 a gallon at Lowe’s.
Frank and Jere took their grandsons Timmy and Charlie to Lowe’s to buy chlorine using gift cards Frank bought at Kroger, which gave him bonus gas points. Lowe’s could not complete the purchase because they said their gift card reader was down. They drove to another Lowe’s but that store’s gift card reader was down too. Frank then went to a nearby Home Depot and bought liquid chlorine for only $4.50 a gallon.
Marble City Opera is working on an opera about body-snatching. Grave robbers used to dig up bodies for use in medical research. Dr. Bill Bass started a collection of donated modern skeletons at the Body Farm.
Kathryn and her husband took a vacation to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida. Kathryn’s brother and his family went surfing in the Gulf of Mexico. Frank's family used to go to ocean beaches on Long Island. Frank remembers the surf as being rough and uninviting.
Frank had hoped to come to an artist reception after the final performance of The Copper Queen. He had a paid comedy improv gig that night. Einstein Simplified was hired to perform at the reception after a renewal of vows ceremony. The brewery that was supposed to host the event canceled on the bride so they could show a Vols baseball game instead.
The improv gig was moved to the married couple’s house in South Knoxville. Frank's maps app went haywire and told him to make a U-turn, which turned out to be incorrect. He drove up as the ceremony was underway on the front lawn.

Frank Murphy’s wife Jere is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Frank and Jere are celebrating their wedding anniversary. Each year, they both try to be the first to say “Happy Flag Day” to the other.
Frank had a discount code from Amazon for $10 off an order that would be shipped to an Amazon Locker at Whole Foods. He tried to order HVAC filters but was told those were too large for a locker. Instead he bought two packages of bronzer.
Jere was away for three weeks. She brought two of their grandsons to Tennessee with her to stay for a week. When the two boys leave, their eldest grandson, Artie Rocket, will arrive for a two-week stay.
Frank thinks Jere didn’t tell him about her plans for them to travel to Northern Virginia together when it’s time to bring Artie home. There were several ideas proposed, including taking Artie to North Carolina while his dad was there on a business trip. Frank was happier about traveling when they decided to stay in a cheap hotel rather than with family. While the idea was being discussed, Jere went into the other room and made the hotel reservations.
Frank sent Jere a screenshot from The Deal Guy’s latest video about ALDI. Frank thought they should get a fire safe for their documents and passports. Jere bought it as their anniversary gift to each other.
Jere reminisces about their “second honeymoon” on their tenth anniversary. At a silent auction at the National Press Club in DC, Frank’s mom had purchased a stay at a condo resort on the island of Molokai. She offered it to Frank & Jere but then decided that she would like to go to Molokai with them. Frank’s grandmother also decided to go, as did one of Frank’s sisters and her husband and his mother. Frank got cheap airfare by purchasing unused seats on a charter flight.
There were complications with the return flight, resulting in an extended layover in Honolulu. Frank’s grandmother said she wanted to see the hand of Fr. Damien De Veuster (now Saint Damien) which was on display in a series of Catholic parishes in Honolulu before it would be buried in Damien’s original grave on Molokai. Frank used a payphone and a phone book to call at least five parishes in search of the hand. They ultimately saw the box that contained the hand on display at the cathedral.

Frank Murphy offers Kathryn Frady a frozen wine slushie, once it thaws enough to pour. He bought the slushie mix during the first episode he recorded with Kathryn about a year ago. You can watch that episode here: https://youtu.be/qZDy2zWnEBw
It’s still hot in the Podcast Ponderosa. The HVAC system will be replaced soon. Frank finds it difficult to use his phone for calls or podcasts while he is doing yard work. Frank’s wife Jere will soon return with their grandchildren Timmy and Charlie. After a week, they will leave and Artie Rocket will arrive.
Frank bought a pole saw but hasn’t used it yet. He has been digging up weeds and tending to his fig plants. While digging up rocks and roots, he made an unusual discovery. His shovel hit something about a foot deep.
After some effort, he excavated a rectangular bath mat or similar piece of carpet. He wonders why it was buried instead of being washed or thrown into the garbage. Kathryn is suspicious. Frank asked neighbor Nancy if anyone on their street had ever gone missing. Nancy thinks it might have been from a kids’ clubhouse in the woods.
Frank threw away the rug. Kathryn thinks it should have been tested for evidence. Frank tells about the divorced couple who sold the house to him. Kathryn wants to turn this show into a murder podcast.
Frank serves the wine slushie in celebration of Kathryn’s successful performances in The Copper Queen. If you missed it, you can still buy a streaming video ticket at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
Kathryn did some drywall repair at her house. Frank didn’t know she was so handy. He imagined her doing the work while she was sick at home. Frank tells Kathryn how he got a dirty look from half a block away for coughing on a street downtown.
When the grandchildren are visiting, Frank teaches them how to get out of the pool. Last year, Artie played a Wii dance video game in silence while Frank did his radio show from the kitchen. He wonders if he could ask neighbor Nancy to invite the kids to try out her son’s new disc golf game in the yard.
Frank suggests that the kids could shoot baskets in the driveway. Kathryn thinks he will need to keep the door open to watch them in case the basketball rolls away. Frank thinks they will be fine.
Kathryn asks if Frank’s kids had curfews when they were teenagers. Frank doesn’t recall them ever wanting to stay out late. One time Frank Jr. had high school swim team practice on a Tuesday night at the same time as Frank’s improv show and Jere’s dress rehearsal with the Knoxville Choral Society. Frank asked another swim team dad to give Frank Jr. a ride after practice to Patrick Sullivan’s Saloon in the Old City.

Frank Murphy and Kathryn Frady are dressed for the heat. The central air conditioning unit at Frank’s house broke down on Memorial Day. His HVAC system is about 24 years old.
At first, Frank thought the house was warm because of the brighter sunlight since several trees were removed. Kathryn is sitting on an ice-pack to stay a little cooler. Frank left some bourbon on her side of the table.
Frank noticed poison ivy around the air conditioning unit. He decided to put on a long-sleeve shirt and remove it before the repairman arrived. After sweating through his clothes, he took a shower using dishwashing liquid to cut through any poison ivy oil.
The repairman needed to reset the emergency cut-off switch but could not find it at first. Eventually he located it under the screened porch. The repairman asked Frank to remove the spiderwebs under the porch.
The repairman said he would not touch the cut-off switch. He said it was a model that was pulled from the market in the 1980s because it was a fire hazard. Rather than only have the switch rewired, Frank decided to replace the HVAC system.
Marble City Opera will produce the stage premiere of The Copper Queen on June 2, 3, and 4. Kathryn Frady plays the role of Julia Lowell, whose ghost is said to haunt the Copper Queen hotel. Tickets are on sale at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
The HVAC salesman sat at the same table used for the podcast. When Frank offered him a tissue, he had to explain why he kept tissues under the table for Kathryn. As they talked, the salesman remembered hearing Frank talk on the radio about being cheap.
Frank and Kathryn will be seen on East Tennessee PBS hosting pledge breaks during the broadcasts of Brit Floyd Space & Time - Live in Amsterdam on Saturday, June 4 at 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, June 9 at 9:30 p.m. Frank was also asked to record a voice-over for the pledge breaks during Straight No Chaser: The 25th Anniversary Celebration on June 9 at 8:00 p.m. and during The Doo Wop Project on June 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Frank Murphy’s friend Azsha White is filling in for Kathryn Frady again today. Kathryn is rehearsing for The Copper Queen, which opens Thursday.
Azsha and her husband like to go camping at Watts Bar Lake. Coincidentally, a blood test said she has uranium in her blood. She recently had treatment for Lyme disease.
Frank’s wife Jere received a gift bag from two students at the school where she works. The bag contains several Korean treats. It turns out that Azsha knows the kids who gave Jere the gift. Frank and Azsha go through the bag and sample the seaweed, crackers, and cookies.
Frank and Azsha both have been taking extra vitamins and zinc to boost their immunity. Frank heard on the news that people who received a smallpox vaccine as kids are probably safe from monkeypox. Frank and his sisters had chickenpox at the same time. He got a shingles vaccine a couple of years ago.
Frank was a mobile deejay while in college. Some of his gigs were at a girls school in Middleburg, Virginia and at the British Embassy in Washington, DC. The owner of the deejay firm heard Frank on the radio in 1982 and offered him the mobile deejay job. A few years later comedian Patton Oswalt worked for the same deejay company, which used cassettes instead of vinyl or CDs.
Frank was looking for a bag of salad at the supermarket but the salad had gone bad. He decided to get shredded taco lettuce instead. As Frank was searching for the bag with the latest “sell by” date, a produce clerk started talking to him about the salad that had gone bad. Later the clerk found Frank in the bakery section and showed him the salad bags he was going to throw in the trash.
When Frank got to the parking lot, a young woman started talking to him about his car. She had the same model of car and was parked next to Frank’s car. Frank was surprised that she would strike up a conversation. They complimented each other’s cars and compared similarities.

Frank Murphy’s friend Azsha White is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Kathryn is rehearsing for her performances in The Copper Queen. Azsha is a voice-over actress and event host.
Azsha and her husband bought a house with a pool. She thought about getting rid of the pool but decided to make the needed repairs and improvements. Azsha and her husband live in New Market, which Frank says is a speed-trap town.
Azsha’s father was a fan of the song “Aja” by Steely Dan, which inspired her name. Azsha and Frank met through the Knox Asian Festival.
Azsha and her pets are in commercials for PetSafe. She has two dogs and an orange tabby, which reminds Frank of the orange cat that he sees in the woods behind his house. Azsha is too young to have heard of Morris the Cat, the mascot of 9Lives commercials in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Frank wonders why he was too busy in 1982 to think about the World’s Fair. He had just started working at a commercial radio station for the first time. Many of the songs that came out that summer still get airplay today. Frank sent Azsha a link to a World’s Fair YouTube channel that is run by East Tennessee PBS. The link to the channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVKLUZFuDFZ2sfNHXSmoUbg
Azsha hosted an event with the Knoxville Area Korean American Association at the Muse last week. Azsha wore a traditional Korean dress called a hanbok.
Frank and his friend Bruce went to brunch at Cracker Barrel on Sunday. Frank was told that the wait for a table would be an hour but several people must have left before being seated because the wait wasn’t that long.
Two friends from church spotted Frank while he and Bruce were waiting for a table. They were a little bit away from the building to stand in the breeze. The people from church thought Frank’s belly looked too big. Frank hoped it was because the wind had puffed out his shirt.
Frank and Azsha both like the hashbrown casserole at Cracker Barrel. Azsha likes their hot chocolate and Frank likes their lattes but not their regular coffee.
Azsha brought her pet axolotl to the Podcast Ponderosa. The axolotl is a type of salamander from Mexico. Azsha named her pet Tofu. He is an albino. She had brought Tofu to an aquarium store on the way to Frank’s house. The store’s staff told Azsha that Tofu is male.

Frank Murphy tells Kathryn Frady that today would have been his late father’s birthday. A family friend arranged for a memorial Mass to be celebrated today. Kathryn suggests that Frank take a selfie while watching the Mass online.
Frank’s interview with comedienne Leanne Morgan airs tonight at midnight on East Tennessee PBS. Kathryn may try to stay up and watch it. When Frank’s PBS interview with Kathryn aired one year ago this week, she forgot to watch it.
Kathryn’s Facebook account was hacked. Someone spent $500 through Facebook Pay. She discovered it when Facebook contacted her and asked if she added a new email address to her account. She had previously used Facebook Pay to make donations to charities. Kathryn’s bank will refund the money from the fraudulent purchase.
Frank often gets notified that someone is trying to change his Facebook password. He has two-factor notification turned on. The hacker can’t change the password without the code number that was sent to Frank.
Kathryn has been practicing her role in The Copper Queen. Frank is impressed that actors and singers can memorize lines. Kathryn has been singing as she does chores around the house. Her husband saw her and laughed. He thought that as she cleaned and sang opera, she looked like a little old Italian woman.
Frank’s neighbor made an Italian Easter dessert called Pastiera Napoletana. It reminded Frank of a cross between a pie and a fruitcake. She brought Frank a slice of the Pastiera Napoletana and asked Frank if he wanted to try an experiment.
Kathryn and her husband often go to the drive-thru lane at a bagel shop. Lately the clerks have been asking if customers want to add a tip to their credit card purchase. Kathryn worries that she said “no” rudely. She also wonders who would get the tip if she had left one.
Frank was surprised to see a box turtle on the deck. He wonders how the turtle climbed up onto the deck. He recorded a video to show Kathryn. Could another animal have dropped the turtle onto the deck?
Frank’s neighbor texted to say that she found a bat in her house. Her son used a t-shirt to catch the bat and then release it from an upper balcony. Frank’s text response was “Holy batshirt!”
Frank set an alarm for 11:30 p.m. to watch the lunar eclipse last week. Kathryn and her husband watched it from their upper deck. Frank was aggravated that an article on the local newspaper’s website gave the wrong time for the eclipse.
