Frank & Friends Show 0041
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Frank’s friend Kira Cupp is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Kira asked Frank to get her an autograph from Internet cook Adam Ragusea. Frank recorded an interview with Adam for “Up Close with Frank Murphy” on East Tennessee PBS. Frank sent Adam a link to a video that Kira made 10 years ago at the Holy Land Market.
Kira has been posting videos on TikTok and Instagram. In one, she plays herself and someone who doesn’t think videography is a real job. The website for Kira’s videography and photography business is https://www.nothingrhymeswithorange.net/
Frank is often asked to donate his time to serve as emcee for events. When he had a full-time radio job, the station would list his charity appearances in the public file for the FCC. He recently emceed a fundraiser for Friends of Literacy. In exchange, they gave logo exposure to the Frank & Friends Show.
The fundraiser was on a Friday night during Lent. Frank and his wife Jere couldn’t eat the chicken entree and had to choose the vegetarian option. It was an imitation meat patty with sausage-like flavoring. Because Frank was the emcee, he was served his meal and had to eat it before anyone else at his table.
One of Frank’s Facebook friends made a post asking why Easter is two weeks later this year. Frank tells Kira that Easter is on the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21. There is always a full moon during Holy Week. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on a Good Friday. Frank wonders if the full moon helped John Wilkes Booth flee the scene.
Kira has a doorbell camera. Frank wonders if she has saved any interesting footage. Kira plans to make a surprise video to show at her sister’s wedding reception.

Frank & Friends Show 0040
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
Tuesday Apr 12, 2022
Frank’s friend Kira Cupp is filling in for Kathryn Frady again today. Kira teases Frank by whispering ASMR style.
The first time Frank came to Knoxville was on the Tuesday before Easter in 2002. That night he attended an Einstein Simplified comedy improv show. He came to town to do an on-air audition with Phil Williams. During the audition, he did a bit that involved putting as many Marshmallow Peeps in his mouth as possible.
Kira challenges Frank to do a monologue based on the word “venue.” Frank tells the story of working at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts until it burned down. He got a job in radio and needed to draw a crowd to a venue called The Wax Museum. He invited friends from Wolf Trap, one of whom brought along Jere, which is how Frank met his wife.
Frank asks Kira to do a monologue on jelly beans. She cannot eat jelly beans because she is now a vegan. Before she was vegan, her family gave her a game called BeanBoozled, which involves nasty-flavored jelly beans.
Marshmallows are not vegan-friendly because they contain gelatin. Kosher marshmallows are made with fish gelatin instead of the kind that comes from farm-animal collagen. Frank realizes that Kira can’t eat the fig jam that he and Jere make because it contains Jell-O.
Kira says it’s hard to find a house because so many people are moving here and prices are going up. Frank says Knoxville is much less crowded than Northern Virginia. Kira might like to buy an older house.
When Frank had his roof replaced, the crew discovered that the old roof didn’t have a proper roof vent and had multiple layers of shingles.
Kira points out that more and more people work from home. Frank works from home in multiple spaces. He records the podcast by the fireplace but edits it in the den. He records his radio voice-tracks in the kitchen so that he can stand up.
Kira asks how Frank can talk so fast and challenges him to recite a tongue-twister. He says, “I slit a sheet, a sheet I slit. Upon a slitted sheet I sit.”
Frank invited Kira to co-host after she sent him a picture of a little fig tree that she and her parents purchased. Frank may have sent Kira too much information about growing figs. Frank is propagating dozens of fig cuttings both in his yard and in flower pots on the porch.

Frank’s friend Kira Cupp is filling in for Kathryn Frady. Frank and Kira last saw each other in July, 2020 when they had an online show in Pigeon Forge. Frank’s grandson Artie was upset when the Frank & Kira Show ended.
Kira’s photography got her noticed by two companies that had job openings. She applied for what she thought would be her dream job and had several interviews. Ultimately the company didn’t fill the position due to budget cuts. She bounced back by creating her own company.
Kira used to act in local films and some murder-reenactment shows. Frank submitted his photo to play someone he resembled in a murder-reenactment show but didn’t get the part. Kira points out that most of the acting jobs for small, local films are unpaid.
Kira once challenged Frank to eat raw vegetables on camera. He didn’t seem bothered by a spicy jalapeno. Kira bit into a jalapeno and was not prepared for how spicy it was.
Kira makes her bed everyday. She says it gives her one extra win before she starts her day. It takes her less than a minute.
Author Elyse Bruce was once interviewed on the Frank & Kira Show in Pigeon Forge. Elyse had an idea to mention Frank in an upcoming book featuring the character Missy Barrett. She invited Frank to read “his” chapter aloud at a book launch for "The Case of the Thoughtful Thief." The event will be on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. in the King Family Library, 408 High Street, Sevierville, TN.

Frank & Friends Show 0038
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022
Frank tells Kathryn that his friend Bean sent him an article about the growth of video podcasts.
Kathryn has scheduled several singers to represent Marble City Opera at the Rossini Festival on April 30, 2022. Kathryn will be out of town until April 30. She will direct a production of Tosca at Gulfshore Opera. Frank is making arrangements for some fill-in co-hosts while Kathryn is away.
Frank has sore muscles from pulling up roots and vines in his yard. Frank has had success going to a gym and going on a weight loss program when he was getting paid to follow the programs and to record commercials for them. Frank has been burying extra fig cuttings in the backyard hoping that some will take root.
Frank had the pool opened earlier this year because the pump was leaking. It and the sand filter were past their life expectancy and needed to be replaced. The old filter was infested with ants.
Kathryn bought traps for yellow jackets. She is allergic to them and will have her husband set the traps while she is out of town.
Kathryn went to her parents’ home and discovered they had removed trees. Frank plans to trim the fig tree that is growing into Kathryn’s parking space.
Kathryn had gotten used to hiding her facial expressions behind a mask. She has to remember that people can now see her face. Frank saw an article by someone who wrote that they want to continue hiding behind a mask. Wearing masks, hats, or sunglasses in a bank used to be prohibited.
Frank and his wife Jere went to brunch after church. They made a reservation on the restaurant’s app. After they finished, the restaurant texted them again to ask how they enjoyed the meal. Frank would prefer that the restaurant ghost him.
Frank could tell that the couple at the next table had heard him talking with Jere. He then heard one of them complain about being served toast and a certain type of cheese in her omelet.

Kathryn’s mother sent her a birthday card with a picture of the White House, which may have been inspired by a photo of Kathryn standing at a fake White House podium at Beyond the Lens in Pigeon Forge.
Frank can’t understand how he got a letter from Opera America congratulating him that Marble City Opera is now a member organization. Kathryn doesn’t recall giving Frank’s home address to Opera America.
Frank has purchased tickets for opening night to see Kathryn sing the lead role in The Copper Queen. Performances are June 2, 3, and 4, 2022 at Flying Anvil Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
In April, Frank will record more episodes of Up Close with Frank Murphy for East Tennessee PBS. Kathryn was his guest on Episode 1. You can watch previous episodes at https://www.pbs.org/show/up-close/
Frank will interview author Renea Winchester on Up Close. He asked her for a review copy. She sent it with a lovely note encouraging him to keep reading after the darkness of chapter one.
Kathryn wants to buy a Meeting Owl for Marble City Opera. It is a camera and microphone system for Zoom calls. Frank used to be call Mr. Owl when he worked at KLOS. He plays the Mr. Owl theme song that was written and recorded by Steve Barden.

Kathryn put a hat on our mascot Mo the Freeze-Dried Tortoise. Frank shows Kathryn some birthday cards that he bought for his wife Jere’s birthday and for his grandson Artie’s birthday.
Kathryn doesn’t make a big deal out of her birthday. Her ideal birthday is to go to the spa and have time to herself. She’s considering a new washer and dryer to be her birthday gift. She and her husband James will probably go out for a steak dinner.
Frank mentions that he sometimes receives restaurant gift cards as a thank-you gift after emceeing a charity event. Jere buys gift cards at the supermarket to get extra gas points.
Frank gave his wife Jere a Polish butter dish for her birthday. Jere’s sister Peggy also gave her a Polish butter dish. Frank thinks Jere should keep the butter dish from Peggy and re-gift the dish that he bought.
When Frank was visiting Northern Virginia, he noticed many gigantic buildings that house the computers in “the cloud” in the area near Dulles Airport. He was glad to have Peruvian chicken for dinner one night and shepherd’s pie on St. Patrick’s Day.
Kathryn and her husband went to Sevier County on St. Patrick’s Day. They tasted ciders at the Tennessee Cider Company and went to SkyFly: Soar America at the Island in Pigeon Forge.

Kathryn asks Frank about his wife Jere’s birthday party. Jere’s sisters organized a family party in Northern Virginia.
Kathryn has a group of people with whom she communicates frequently. If one of those people doesn’t respond in their “normal” response time, she worries about them. Recently, she didn’t hear from her colleague Brandon Gibson in his normal response time. When she noticed he hadn’t posted anything on social media either, she worried about him and contacted a mutual friend to ask if she had heard from Brandon.
Frank compliments Kathryn for saving her topic for the show and not telling him about it when they were at the Ice Bears game. Kathryn sang the National Anthem while wearing flag-themed stilettos. Kathryn had to use the announcer’s microphone instead of having her own.
Frank and Jere helped sell rubber pucks at the hockey game for a Chuck-a-Puck promotion to raise money for Marble City Opera. Fans could buy 6 pucks for $5 and write their names on the pucks, which they throw on the ice during the second intermission. Several fans took the pens to their seats and forgot to return them. Frank was tired and under-caffeinated at the game but tried not to show it. He saved his venting for today’s episode.
Frank now has two peach plants growing from the pits he planted in a bucket last fall. Some of the fig cuttings he planted in February have started to sprout leaves and figlets. He wondered if he should remove the figlets to force more energy to the roots but decided to leave them alone and see what happens.
Frank is thinking about trying to propagate dogwood trees from cuttings. He found a YouTube video about it from a woman named Meagan who also had a video of a box turtle laying eggs at Ijams Nature Center in Knoxville. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/-vY1o67ZPCs
The neighbor behind Frank’s house said he didn’t want the leaves from Frank’s yard leaning on his fence. Frank is going to have the lawn mowing crew try to remove as many leaves as they can.

Kathryn’s birthday is one week away. Frank says today is his ¾ birthday.
A friend of Frank’s would always recommend Mr. Boston Rock & Rye for a sore throat. After straining his voice during an improv show, Frank tried to make his own Rock & Rye with a shot of rye whiskey and a spoonful of crystallized honey.
Kathryn and one of her high school friends went to dinner and an Einstein Simplified comedy improv show. Kathryn’s friend is interested in learning more about the Body Farm.
Kathryn’s parents invited her to come to Texas for a family event but they didn’t really expect her to make the trip. Frank invited someone to his wife’s birthday party in Virginia, even though they couldn’t attend. He didn’t want them to feel left out.
Kathryn used DoorDash to send two slices of cheesecake to her parents. Frank had difficulty unsubscribing from FTD’s emails after his mother died. Kathryn’s husband doesn’t like sending flowers because they will die. Frank still has a houseplant that he received in a sympathy bouquet when his mother died.
Kathryn found the instructions “col canto” in part of the score of The Copper Queen. It means that the conductor and orchestra must follow the lead of the soloist. She sent a photo of it to the conductor, saying it was her favorite part of the score. Kathryn will play Julia Lowell, a ghost who haunts The Copper Queen hotel. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Kathryn compliments Frank’s green tie, which has harps on it. The harp is the official symbol of Ireland. Frank points out that a three-leaf shamrock is associated with St. Patrick, who used it to teach about the Holy Trinity. Many people incorrectly post images of four-leaf clovers. Many don’t realize that the nickname for Patrick is Paddy, which comes from the Gaelic name Pádraig. #ShamrockNotClover #PaddyNotPatty
Frank says it's hard to find an Irish soda bread that reminds him of the ones his mother used to make. He says it’s a little easier to find them at stores in the Washington, DC suburbs. He doesn’t like corned beef and cabbage.
Frank likes shepherd’s pie made with lamb. Kathryn says lambs are too cute to eat. Frank thinks sheep are remarkably stupid, based on a sheepdog demonstration he saw in Ireland. Kathryn will celebrate with an Irish hard cider.
The Knox St. Patrick’s Parade was canceled due to a snowstorm on March 12. Kathryn hasn’t seen that much snow since she was a little girl living in Virginia. Frank hates the snow. Kathryn imagined that she woke up in Narnia on the day of the snowstorm.
Kathryn lived in Texas and Frank lived in California during the Blizzard of ‘93. Kathryn was awaiting a surprise birthday party in 1993. Frank asked his sisters-in-law to arrange a small surprise party for his wife Jere earlier this week. Frank notices that some of his dead friends still get Facebook birthday greetings from other friends who don’t know the person has died.

Frank wants Kathryn to tell him if they are at a huggable event or non-huggable event. Frank threatens to hug Kathryn on-camera when they reach 1,000 subscribers.
Frank once made another deejay upset by posting a photo of the two of them on Facebook. He cropped the other person out and re-posted the photo. He looked online to see whatever happened to the other deejay.
He found the answer on a radio-themed bulletin board and made the mistake of reading other threads about the station where he works now. Anonymous trolls complained about the signal strength. Kathryn left an online opera forum that was full of complaints about singers.
Kathryn and her husband James decided to visit Lakeshore Park after hearing Frank talk about it. It seems that they were probably there at the same time as Frank and his wife Jere but didn’t realize it.
Frank thinks its weird to drive to a park to take a walk when he could just walk around the subdivision where he lives. He saw a lot of people in hammocks, including one guy in a tree immediately next to a parking lot.
Frank and Kathryn spoke on stage at the Knoxville Man Show. They felt overdressed when they threw axes and when Kathryn sat on the Harley-Davidson simulator. Frank and Kathryn are supposed to try horseback riding for a See More Smokies episode.
Today is Jere’s birthday, the Ides of March. Frank bought her a Polish butter dish that she wanted. Kathryn thinks he should take it out of the shipping package and gift wrap it. Frank suggests putting a candle in the butter and scratching the words “happy birthday” into the butter.
Kathryn’s birthday is in two weeks. Frank stopped sending birthday greetings via Facebook and instead prefers to send birthday text messages to people he knows well enough.
