Frank & Friends Show 0031
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Frank and Kathryn saw each other at two opera performances. Frank and his wife Jere attended Marble City Opera’s “I Can’t Breathe.” Frank was relieved that he didn’t have to help clean up or stack chairs.
As Frank and Jere were settling into their seats as Kathryn came over to say hi. Kathryn hugged Jere and would have hugged Frank but he missed the attempted hugging.
Frank and Jere went to dinner with Kathryn and her husband James before a performance of Knoxville Opera’s Mefistofele. When they got to the Tennessee Theatre, they talked with critic Alan Sherrod who said he watches the Frank & Friends Show. Alan’s website is https://ArtsKnoxville.com/
Kathryn chatted with Mary Costa at intermission. Mary was the voice of Princess Aurora in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and played Cunégonde in the 1959 London premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Candide. Frank spoke with conductor Reginald Houze, who conducted a banda in Mefistofele and will conduct Marble City Opera’s The Copper Queen. Reginald said he wanted to be a guest on the Frank & Friends Show.
Kathryn posted a photo of herself trying on her costume for The Copper Queen. Frank puts it on the screen alongside a painting of Julia Lowell. Tickets are available at https://www.MarbleCityOpera.com/tickets
Kathryn and Frank have been Facebook friends for five years. They have different memories of when they first met. Frank didn’t recall interviewing Kathryn about La Traviata but he found the May, 2017 interview posted on Facebook. When is the appropriate time to become Facebook friends?
Frank uses Facebook as a substitute for LinkedIn in the areas of comedy, radio, and television. Frank posts about his professional interests but tends to save his personal stories for this podcast.
Kathryn will be out of town for a few opera jobs. Frank will need a few fill-in co-hosts when she’s away.

Frank & Friends Show 0030

Frank compliments Kathryn for the byVINNIK outfit she is wearing.
Frank is on the board of Kathryn’s Marble City Opera. He says he probably can’t get off the board because he and Kathryn are podcast partners.
Kathryn took a class via Zoom. She wonders why some people turn off their cameras. Frank admits that he gets self-conscious about how he looks on Zoom calls and FaceTime.
Frank was interviewed over Zoom by the Quitters Never Give Up podcast. He isn’t sure if they recorded the video or just the audio. Kathryn uses a ring light at home for Zoom calls. Frank said he saw the reflection of the ring light in Kathryn’s eyes on a Zoom call.
Frank saw a local celebrity walking in Lakeshore Park. She was wearing huge sunglasses as if to say “don’t recognize me.” When they passed a second time, she said hi to Frank. It was his friend Heather Waliga from WBIR-TV.
Frank uploads pictures and screenshots to Google Photos. The app asks him to categorize certain pictures. It asked if several photos of Frank and Kathryn represented Christmas, or a museum, or beaches.
Tennessee is issuing new license plates for all cars. Frank and his wife Jere chose the design that has the words “In God We Trust” above the tri-star design. Jere noticed that the plates without “In God We Trust” start with letters while those with the motto start with numbers.
Kathryn asks if Jere plays Wordle. Like Frank, Jere does the daily crossword puzzle instead.
Kathryn posted a photo on social media of herself in a costume she will use in Marble City Opera’s production of “The Copper Queen” in June. Frank called it a strumpet costume.

Frank & Friends Show 0029
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Thursday Mar 03, 2022
Frank shows Kathryn an alligator head that he bought in New Orleans. He was supposed to show it on the Mardi Gras episode.
All three performances of Marble City Opera’s “I Can’t Breathe” were sold out. Librettist Brandon Gibson watched on Zoom. Kathryn held the iPad with Brandon on Zoom as the audience arrived on opening night.
Frank organized a group of former Front Page Follies cast members to sing at the Matt Hinkin Tribute Party, which was a fundraiser for PJ Parkinson’s Support Group. Frank got calls about the requirements for the opening act and the video presentation.
At the last minute, Kathryn had to make new lodging arrangements for one of the singers in her opera. The new hotel smelled like smoke, which required another change. The booking service’s computer system was down, which complicated matters.
Frank took a screen grab of himself getting ashes at church during Mass on Ash Wednesday. Frank and his wife Jere cleaned flecks of ash off each other’s noses. After Mass, they went to a luncheon in the parish hall.
Catholics abstain from meat but are allowed to eat fish on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays during Lent. Many fast-food restaurants sell fish sandwiches during March. One restaurant has introduced a spicy fish sandwich.
Frank and Kathryn will speak on stage during the Knoxville Man Show at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2021 inside the Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park. Get the full schedule here: https://www.wate6events.com/the-knoxville-manshow
In episode 0028, Frank described taking a screen grab of himself at a friend’s funeral. Frank sent the link for episode 0028 to the widower of the deceased. He plans to have lunch with the man on Monday.
Kathryn was once told she didn’t look good in blue but she regularly wears blue anyway. Frank was told that blue makes his eyes pop. He met a woman at WUTK radio who noticed his eyes. She was in her late 20s and listened to Frank when she was in middle school.

Happy Mardi Gras! Frank serves Kathryn some fig jam and toast as promised during the fig talk in the last episode. Kathryn thinks Frank could sell his fig jam and fig tree cuttings.
Frank has had several crews of home-improvement workers at his house over the past few months. One of the workers asked to come inside to use the bathroom. Generally, they stand behind a tree. Frank scrubbed the bathroom after the worker used it because Kathryn was on her way over. Frank is not bothered by dead things but is grossed out by poop.
Kathryn reveals that Frank has a photo of himself at a funeral. He saved a screen grab from a livestream of a funeral for a woman who was a “ballet mom” and “improv mom.” Her daughter was in the Nutcracker and is now in the Oak Ridge High School improv group.
Kathryn admits that she will treat the spouse of a friend as if she knows them well. An introverted husband of a friend seemed surprised that Kathryn acted so familiar toward him.
Frank spoke with two strangers at last week’s Einstein Simplified show. One was visiting from Ohio and the other from North Carolina. The women said that Einstein Simplified was “legit funny.”
Einstein Simplified was in a movie called “Fish Bait” that is now available on Tubi. https://tubitv.com/movies/638830/fish-bait
Frank took screen grabs from the PBS Passport link to his interview with Kathryn on “Up Close with Frank Murphy.” Here is the episode link: https://www.pbs.org/video/up-close-with-frank-murphy-xqr1vv/

Frank tells Kathryn that they have passed 600 YouTube subscribers. They hope to reach 1,000 as soon as possible. Please ask your friends to tap subscribe at https://YouTube.com/FrankAndFriendsShow while logged in to YouTube or Gmail.
Kathryn says she has “sleep drunkenness” from being tired. She’s been busy working on the world premiere of Marble City Opera’s “I Can’t Breathe” on Thursday, February 24, 2022. In-person tickets are sold out but streaming tickets are still available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
Kathryn has done several television, radio, and print interviews this past week. People who don’t know Kathryn’s schedule are asking her to go places and to answer questions about events that are months away.
Frank and his wife Jere will be in a Front Page Follies style tribute to Matt Hinkin on Thursday, February 24, 2022. The event is a fundraiser for PJ Parkinson’s Support Group. David Haley Lauver wrote six parody songs that honor Matt. Lori Tucker found a giant picture of Matt’s face in the basement at WATE-TV.
Frank went to a business lunch at Twin Peaks on Valentine’s Day. All of the customers in the restaurant were men. The waitresses were dressed in red lingerie for the holiday.
In the Fall, Frank got some apple seeds and peach pits from two of his neighbors. He planted the seeds and pits in buckets with garden soil. He left the buckets outside during most of the winter but brought them inside in the middle of February. One of the buckets has a green sprout. He thinks it might be a peach sapling.
Frank is trying to root some fig cuttings in the basement. He wonders if some of his friends and neighbors will ask for fig cuttings. Kathryn suggests that he try selling his fig cuttings.

Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Kathryn tells Frank that complaints are for Wednesdays. She tells those working on her opera productions that they can only complain during a one-hour window on Wednesdays and they must be available to hear her response.
In-person tickets are sold-out for Marble City Opera’s next production. Streaming video tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
Several former Front Page Follies cast members will sing at the Matt Hinkin Tribute Party on Thursday, February 24 at The Press Room, 730 N. Broadway in Knoxville. Tickets are available at https://www.pjparkinsons.org/events-1/matt-hinkin-tribute-party
Complaint Wednesday reminds Frank of working at the Wolf Trap Farm Park box office. Customers who had a complaint were told to contact “Mrs. Friday,” who was not a real person. The name was a red flag for the staff to know how to handle the complaint and for one of the managers to play the part of “Mrs. Friday.”
Talk of complaints prompts Kathryn to open a bottle of hibiscus-flavored cider that they received when recording a show at Tennessee Cider Company. A crew is working on the walls at Frank’s house, creating occasional loud noises.
Frank wants Kathryn to require her singers and board members to subscribe to the Frank & Friends Show on YouTube. Frank put Kathryn in touch with a violinist but the violinist was unavailable for the next production.
Frank got his dental hygienist to subscribe to our YouTube channel while she was cleaning his teeth. He got a few more subscribers who came to see Dr. Bill Bass on Valentine’s Day at Cherokee Caverns. A mom and daughter named Shani and Hannah said they missed Frank from his top-40 radio days and that they would subscribe to the YouTube channel.
Kathryn wonders what would make her feel more like a grown-up. She doesn’t cook many meals. Frank thinks that the life events that make you feel like a grown-up are the birth of a child and the death of a parent.
East Tennessee PBS has put the first five episodes of “Up Close with Frank Murphy” on the PBS Passport app. The sixth episode airs tonight (actually Wednesday, February 23) at 12:30 a.m. Frank had to recut the intro to tonight’s show, which meant he had to trim his beard and match the wardrobe. You can watch “Up Close with Frank Murphy” online at https://www.pbs.org/show/up-close/

Frank & Friends Show 0025
Thursday Feb 17, 2022
Thursday Feb 17, 2022
Kathryn called Frank while parked in front of his house. A crew of workers was in the driveway, blocking Kathryn’s path. They were injecting insulation into the walls of Frank’s house.
Frank thinks Kathryn is fancy. He cleaned the bathroom before she arrived and used an ornate serving spoon to put ice in her Frank & Friends Show coffee mug.
Frank shows off the contents of the goodie bags handed out at the “Valentine’s Day with Dr. Bass” event. One of the items is a Frank & Friends Show refrigerator magnet. Former radio personality Jeff Detrow and his wife Kristen were at the event and put the magnet on their fridge. Frank tells Kathryn to keep the magnet away from her computer.
Kathryn and her husband James heard a loud sound at their house. They couldn’t find the cause of the sound after checking everywhere. While looking in the attic, James took a photo of a painting that was left there by the previous owners. The young girl in the painting bears a slight resemblance to Kathryn, who jokes that she came back to haunt herself. Frank says she should write an opera about it.
Frank and his wife Jere celebrated Valentine’s Day by going to a movie and dinner the night before, which was Super Bowl Sunday. There was only one other couple in the movie theater to see Death on the Nile. Frank thought the movie was beautiful to look at but the portrayal of Hercule Poirot was dissatisfying.
After the movie, they went to The Cheesecake Factory, around the time the Super Bowl was starting. There was still a thirty-minute wait for a table, which surprised Frank. No one in the restaurant was paying attention to the game on the TV behind the bar.

Frank & Friends Show 0024

Frank’s longtime friend Gene “Bean” Baxter is filling in for Kathryn Frady today. Bean’s podcast is “A Cup of Tea and a Chat with Allie and Bean,” which is found on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/allieandbean with a free weekly sampler on most major podcast apps including Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/A-Cup-of-Tea-and-a-Chat-Weekly-Sampler-Podcast/B08JJR7B6J For their 200th episode, Allie and Bean did a special livestream on YouTube.
Frank and Bean are big fans of Regis Philbin. Frank admires that Regis had many shows that were canceled before starting “Live with Regis & Kathie Lee” when he was 57 years old. Bean mentions that Frank emcees many events in the Knoxville area.
The Frank & Friends Show is a media sponsor of this year’s Akima Cabaret, a fun night of musical comedy, presented by the Akima Club of Knoxville. This year’s theme is “The Roaring ‘20s - When Decades Collide.” The Akima Cabaret is at the Mill & Mine on February 18 and 19. Proceeds benefit dozens of area charities. Get your tickets before they’re gone at https://www.akimaclub.org
February 12 was the 30th anniversary of the demise of the top-40 format on WAVA in Washington, the station where Frank and Bean first met as co-workers. David Edgar produced an hour-long farewell that the shares each year on social media. You can listen to WAVA’s final hour here: https://formatchangearchive.com/the-final-hour-of-1051-wava-washington-dc/
Frank and Bean produced a one-hour show called “The 25th Hour” that aired on WAVA each year when Daylight Saving Time ended and the clock changed from 2:00 a.m. back to 1:00 a.m. Bean wonders if anyone cares about all this inside radio talk.
Frank will be a guest deejay on a show called “The Funhouse” on WUTK 90.3 The Rock at 8:00 pm. on Friday, February 25, 2022. You can listen online here: https://wutkradio.com/ Frank is worried that he can’t think of any cool songs to play on the show. The one song Frank thought of was “Ma Tit' Fille” by Buckwheat Zydeco. Bean suggests a few other Mardi Gras songs.
Bean used to live in New Orleans and says that Mardi Gras is not just a bawdy celebration in the French Quarter. He says that Mardi Gras in the Garden District is family-friendly. A traditional Mardi Gras food is pancakes. Frank hopes that Bean will visit East Tennessee so they can go to some of the pancake restaurants in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
Bean is gratified by how many fans of the Kevin & Bean show followed him to his podcast. Frank meets fans who wondered what happened to him after he left the station that they listened to in middle school and high school. Frank has a fan who texts him almost every day about either LakeFM or East Tennessee PBS Scholars’ Bowl.
Bean asks if working on Scholars’ Bowl helps Frank solve crossword puzzles. He also asks if Frank shares his crossword results like many people do with their Wordle scores.
Bean is shocked that Frank pays for a crossword puzzle subscription because Frank would never pay when they would go out for a meal with co-workers on the Kevin & Bean show.
Bean bought his house in New Orleans from Jay Thomas, who also did a radio show from that house. Frank worked as Jay’s radio producer for a short time at KPWR.

Frank and his wife were in the cast of the Front Page Follies for five years. In its 40th and final year, the Follies cast reprised some of the favorite parody songs from the previous 39 shows. Opera singer Maurice Hendricks sang a song to the tune of “Go Down Moses.”
Kathryn’s family members referred to Frank as “Uncle Frank” because he told her not to get overcommitted on opening night of Marble City Opera’s next production. Tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
PJ Parkinson’s Support Group is holding a tribute to Matt Hinkin as a fundraiser on the same night as Marble City Opera’s production. Frank originally wasn’t available to emcee but he suggested that they sing some Front Page Follies style songs about Matt Hinkin. Without realizing the connection, they contacted Kathryn and asked her to sing the songs.
Frank contacted former Front Page Follies cast members and found 16 willing to sing at the Matt Hinkin Tribute Party on Thursday, February 24 at The Press Room, 730 N. Broadway in Knoxville. Tickets are available at https://www.pjparkinsons.org/events-1/matt-hinkin-tribute-party
A photojournalist from the News Sentinel came to a Marble City Opera rehearsal to take photos and record a video of Kathryn. He said most people are nervous about speaking on-camera. Kathryn mentioned that she wasn’t nervous because she co-hosts a podcast with Frank. The photographer, Saul Young, was excited to hear it. He has taken several pictures of Frank over the years.
Frank enjoys Saul Young’s Instagram feed, especially when Uncle Saul takes his nieces to tourist attractions in the Smokies. Saul’s Instagram account is at https://www.instagram.com/saulyoung/
Frank was a guest on a podcast called Quitters Never Give Up. The hosts, Lindsay, Jennifer, Edwin, and Christopher discuss the old Kevin & Bean Show and the podcasts hosted by Kevin, Bean, and some other former cast members. The podcast’s homepage is https://anchor.fm/quitters-never-give-up

Kathryn has been lost in thought for the past few days. Frank says she should say she’s meditating. She has a Marble City Opera production coming up on February 24. She calls herself a portfolio artist because she has a lot of different facets to her career.
Frank put on some bronzer before recording a video on a Tuesday. He left the bronzer on when he went to perform with Einstein Simplified. Some of the guys referred to Frank’s bronzer during their improv scenes. Frank thought it looked good and will wear it again this week.
Frank was curious about a man buying hundreds of bananas at Sam’s Club. He wonders why someone would buy so many bananas. Kathryn suggests that he might own several monkeys.
Kathryn recalls that there is a tiger sanctuary in East Tennessee. Frank once arranged for some tigers from a sanctuary in California to be in a photo shoot with Mark & Brian of KLOS. Kathryn once petted baby lions in Africa. Frank mentions that Zoo Knoxville has baby lions.
Frank asks Kathryn where she keeps her butter. She keeps it in the refrigerator. Frank and his wife Jere have been keeping their butter at room temperature. Jere wants a Polish butter dish for her birthday.
Frank has noticed that the expiration dates on milk containers seem to be further away than they used to be.
