Frank informs Kathryn that the Frank & Friends Show is a media sponsor of this year’s Akima Cabaret, a fun night of musical comedy, presented by the Akima Club of Knoxville. This year’s theme is “The Roaring ‘20s - When Decades Collide.” The Akima Cabaret is at the Mill & Mine on February 18 and 19. Proceeds benefit dozens of area charities. Get your tickets before they’re gone at https://www.akimaclub.org
Tonya Cinnamon complimented Kathryn’s hair in the YouTube comments on the Ice Bears episode. Rena’ suggested that Frank’s freeze-dried tortoise Mo could be an on-camera mascot for the show. Kathryn was a color-guard instructor for a high-school team that chose a turtle for their mascot because slow and steady wins the race, and they have a tough exterior but are gooey on the inside.
Happy year of the tiger! Kathryn’s husband was born in a year of the tiger. She looked online to learn that Frank was born in a year of the ox. Kathryn was born in a year of the rooster.
Kathryn recommends a 2016 movie called Mascots, which was directed by Christopher Guest. Frank once hosted a mascot dance contest.
February 3 is the Feast of St. Blaise. Frank likes to go to church and get his throat blessed. At Catholic churches, the priest will place two unlit candles near your throat and pray for you to be free of ailments of the throat through the intercession of St. Blaise.
Frank asks Kathryn if the roast cooking in the crock pot is making her hungry. They recall a time they crossed paths at a barbeque restaurant before they knew each other as well as they do now.

Frank saw someone on the news who talks like a ventriloquist. Kathryn saw a male contestant on The Bachelorette who also talks through clenched teeth.
Kathryn’s husband gave a Christmas gift to their dog Sasha. It was a used library book titled The Dog Who Sang at the Opera by Jim West and Marshall Izen. The book tells the true story of a dog named Pasha who howled during Renee Fleming’s aria in Manon at the Metropolitan Opera.
Kathryn photoshopped her dog into a photo of her performance of Suor Angelica. Sasha walked toward Kathryn when she was rehearsing the death scene at home. Frank says dogs would eat their deceased masters.
Kathryn uses Opera Practice Perfect, a recorded piano track for singers to rehearse at home. Frank’s wife Jere uses a similar track for choral singing. Frank has a recording of instrumental tracks for improv shows.
Kathryn bought a backpack to carry Sasha when the dog gets too tired on their walks. Frank found a key tag in the driveway and wondered if it belonged to Kathryn.
Frank likes whole grain mustard, which Kathryn compares to Dippin’ Dots. Frank thinks Dippin’ Dots are too cold. He says he has the “mustard of the future” because it appears to have an expiration date of May 2122.
Frank saw a Facebook post from a realtor who had been contacted by someone looking to move to Tennessee from California. The potential homebuyer has a long list of requirements for the property they want to buy.
Frank tries to give Kathryn some promotional drinking glasses from Canada Dry. He thinks his father sent away for them in the 1970s. Kathryn says she tends to accidentally break props that opera directors tell her to throw during a show.

Frank asks Kathryn how big is the window of time allowed to respond to a text that says “on my way.” He doesn’t want to send a “drive safely” text while she’s driving. Kathryn asks Frank to send her a text reminding her about something because she doesn’t send texts to herself.
Frank is editing an episode that they recorded at a Knoxville Ice Bears game. Kathryn sang the national anthem and Frank dropped a “first puck.” They were introduced over the P.A. system as “Marble City Opera’s Kathryn and Frank.”
Frank sometimes gets recognized by people in their late 20s who listened to him on top-40 radio when they were in middle school and high school. Dan and Tori of Tennessee Cider Company are two such people.
While at the Tennessee Cider Company, Frank mentioned that he once had a pet tortoise who ate hibiscus flowers. That species of tortoise is susceptible to upper respiratory tract disease.
Kathryn and her brother used to race box turtles when they lived near Richmond, Virginia. Frank also loves box turtles, which are technically tortoises. Tortoises can't swim.
When Frank’s tortoise died, he had it freeze-dried by a taxidermist in Wetumpka, Alabama. Frank brought the tortoise to show Kathryn.
Frank and his family once referred to the tortoise by the codename “Grandma’s Ashes,” which caused some confusion at a National Park in Utah.
Kathryn recalls a news story about an opera fan whose ashes were dumped into the orchestra pit at the Metropolitan Opera during intermission. Frank says there are stories of ashes being dumped in various places at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Kathryn is humming “Tom’s Diner” and Frank is reminded of a mashup with that song and “Jeannie,” the theme song from I Dream of Jeannie.
Kathryn went to Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience in Dallas. Frank asks if it’s better than going to a regular art museum. Kathryn liked how Van Gogh’s art moved across the walls of the galleries.
Kathryn saw someone creating tintype photos in New Orleans. Frank asks about the old-time photos in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
Frank and Kathryn were texting to find a mutually convenient time to record podcast episodes. Frank was worried about having enough time for post-production editing. Kathryn misread Frank’s text.
Dave Morales, a former co-worker of Frank’s, was in Knoxville for a day. Dave, Frank, and Becca James made plans to have dinner together. Dave stayed in a hotel an hour from downtown.
Frank suggested some of his favorite Market Square restaurants. The group decided on Tupelo Honey Cafe, which had been closed for remodeling. Fortunately the restaurant had reopened. Frank loved the Salt & Pepper Crispy Brussels Sprouts.
After dinner, Frank suggested they go to the Peter Kern Library, a bar hidden in the Oliver Hotel. They were told that there was a 45-minute wait to get in. They also learned that there was a dress code and a password required.

Frank didn’t notice the Frank & Friends Show iPhone case in the selfie that Kathryn recently posted on her Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Knoxville got less snow than surrounding areas due to the “horseshoe effect.” Kathryn likes to watch WeatherNation because they play weather all day long. Frank hates snow and ice because he broke his arm on the ice when he was 13 and crashed his car on the ice when he was 23.
Frank didn’t drive downtown to Kathryn’s board meeting and joined via Zoom instead. He likes being able to do his LakeFM radio show from his house rather than drive through the snow to the studio. Kathryn likes playing in the snow with her dog Sasha.
Frank used to emcee the Knox Asian Festival when he worked for the radio sponsor of the festival. This year, he was asked to emcee a Japanese New Year Celebration. In Japan, New Year’s Day is a bigger deal than Christmas. Frank drew the Japanese character for wealth at the calligraphy booth.
Frank once organized a Chinese New Year celebration on KROQ. They broadcast the morning show from the Panda Inn in Pasadena and had a live performance by Tori Amos.
Frank only knows a few words in Japanese. Many people know that thank you is “domo arigato.” You’re welcome is “dou itashimashite.” As he was being introduced to some Japanese speakers, the only words he could pick out were “Frank-san.”
Frank enjoyed a mochi cake at the Japanese New Year celebration. Kathryn bought a frozen mochi treat similar to ice cream in New York.

Frank and Kathryn show off some of the gifts they received for Christmas. Frank has new slippers. Kathryn has a new Apple Watch, which prompts Frank to ask if she’s ever heard of Dick Tracy.
Kathryn has Dog Corn Holders that look like dachshunds and a Tater Baker for microwaving potatoes.
Frank found two bones in some tuna salad that he was eating. He had mixed the tuna with mayonnaise, mustard, hot sauce, and some chopped apple pieces.
Frank buys low-sodium tuna. Kathryn enjoys salty snacks but Frank prefers sweets. Frank’s wife also likes salty snacks.
Kathryn called Frank while she was at Café du Monde in New Orleans. The background sounds of the bells of St. Louis Cathedral and a live jazz band made it almost impossible for Frank to hear Kathryn.
Frank and his wife have been watching a Netflix show called Stay Close. Kathryn and her husband have been watching Cobra Kai.
Frank did Zoom interviews from the podcast set to promote East Tennessee PBS Scholars’ Bowl. None of the reporters noticed the Frank & Friends Show sign behind Frank. He used a professional microphone, unlike many Zoom interviews on TV.
Frank heard voices coming from the neighbors’ yard after dark on a cold night. He remembered that the neighbor had plans to buy a hot tub.
Kathryn doesn’t eat oysters but Frank loves them. Her husband got charbroiled oysters in New Orleans, which Frank now wants to try. Kathryn suggests that the two couples go to New Orleans together.
Kathryn and her husband went to a Buc-ee's in Texas. She said they sell leather goods, keychains and Texas-themed items. They are looking forward to visiting the world’s largest Buc-ee's when it opens in Kodak, Tennessee, at exit 407 of I-40.

Frank and Kathryn are back at the podcast table after their respective Christmas holidays. Frank has purchased two Frank & Friends coffee mugs for the set and an iPhone case for Kathryn.
Kathryn and her husband decided to break up their Christmas trip into shorter segments. They drove to New Orleans before going to spend Christmas in Dallas.
Kathryn’s husband is a fan of the New Orleans Saints. Kathryn’s Christmas gift to him was tickets to their game against the Carolina Panthers. The tickets said the game started at noon. When they got to the Superdome, they found out the gametime had been changed.
Frank had FaceTime chat with Artie Rocket. They talked about NFL teams that had moved or changed their names. Frank’s cousins, Megan & Erin, sang the national anthem at a Washington Wizards game.
Before recording today’s episode, Kathryn had to record three opera arias for an audition. Frank is curious why she had to make new recordings of arias that she had already recorded.
Kathryn asked Frank to pick up more copies of VIP Knoxville magazine so that she can send one to her parents. They used to be available in a box on Market Square but the box is gone. He found some magazines beautifully displayed in the lobby of the Oliver Hotel.
Frank’s wife bought noisemakers and 2022 eyeglasses but they ended up staying home and going to bed before midnight.

It’s the Frank & Friends Show staff Christmas party! Frank shows off some zippered hoodies and a beach towel from the merch store. Kathryn brought the drinks. Frank has pfeffernüsse.
The first drink is a “poinsettia,” made with prosecco and cranberry juice. Kathryn also added some triple sec. Frank has a stash of unopened liquor bottles but Kathryn doesn’t need any of them.
Kathryn took her husband on the Sevierville driving tour and to Anakeesta after having filmed episodes about them. Frank was supposed to take his wife to Anakeesta but hasn’t yet.
Frank’s sisters sent him some drinking glasses engraved with the initials JER. Kathryn suggests that he have an E added to make it say JERE, which is Frank’s wife’s name.
Frank says that Kathryn is his drinking buddy because he consumes more alcohol on-camera with her than he does at any other time. He doesn’t enjoy drinking at parties or events. He prefers to be working at the party or event as the emcee or an entertainer.
Frank saw a long-range forecast predicting especially cold weather in January. He made a sound that reminded Kathryn of the Dramatic Chipmunk meme that became popular on the Internet in 2007. Frank asked if she remembered the Numa Numa Dance video from 2005.
When Frank had dial-up Internet in the mid-90s, his co-workers at KROQ were frustrated that they couldn’t call him. Jimmy Kimmel called the phone company, pretending to be Frank and had call-waiting, which cost extra, added to Frank’s home phone.
Frank has a friend who likes to have a splash of Kentucky bourbon in her eggnog. Frank enjoys plain eggnog from Weigel’s. He tried an eggnog milkshake from Buddy’s Bar-B-Q but would have preferred a stronger eggnog flavor.
Frank is disappointed that Starbucks discontinued their eggnog latte. Frank is surprised to learn that Kathryn never drinks coffee. Frank has a jar of fig jam for Kathryn and her husband.
Kathryn watched some of The Princess Switch movies on Netflix. Frank started to watch a movie called Dear Christmas and told Kathryn to watch it because it’s about a podcaster played by Melissa Joan Hart. They both shut it off after a few minutes. Frank gave up when a character named Chris Massey, played by Jason Priestly, appeared. Frank thought that creating a character whose name sounded like “Christmasy” was not believable. He later realized that an executive at Titanic Museum Attraction is named Chris Massie.
Frank enjoyed Jingle All the Way but didn’t like A Merry Friggin’ Christmas, which was one of the last films starring Robin Williams. Kathryn’s favorite Christmas movie is The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Frank dislikes playing songs about winter weather on the radio in December. He would prefer to save Winter Wonderland and Let It Snow until January and February.
Kathryn sings “O Holy Night” at her parents’ church every Christmas Eve. Frank likes “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Here is the link to Frank’s Spotify Christmas playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/66AWAPdqresHlSwyMxh74Z?si=909e3d2e7d5f4bd4

Frank added several items to the merchandise selection at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com Kathryn is back from her opera auditions in New York. She posted a photo of herself on Facebook all dressed up for an audition.
Kathryn saw Eurydice at the Metropolitan Opera. Frank has bad memories of taking a college course in Greek mythology and history.
Kathryn was the soloist singer for the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville in 2015. That same year, Frank’s wife Jere was the prelude singer before one of the performances. Frank was a voice actor for the pageant in 2019. He played six characters. He and Kathryn were both voice actors in this year’s pageant.
In the final performance of this year’s Nativity Pageant, Kathryn had to fill in for the female narrator, whose voice was hoarse that day. She also played Mary and some people didn’t realize she was doing both voices.
A woman in the audience asked Frank and Kathryn how her family could participate in the Nativity Pageant next year. To be a costumed character, send an email to NativityCastKnoxville@gmail.com To join the choir, find the rehearsal schedule at http://www.knoxvillenativity.com/choir.html
Kathryn’s friends have commented on how early she sent out Christmas cards. Frank needs to update his Christmas card list. He had to cross off a few dead people. His picture is on the card twice but Jere is only pictured once.
Frank found a Christmas card on the ground by his trash cart. He assumes it is from the trash collectors who are hoping for a Christmas tip. Frank saw a Facebook post from a former mail carrier saying to avoid giving mail carriers cash or gift cards because the carrier might be wrongly suspected of stealing the cash or gift card from the mail.
Kathryn hung Christmas lights on her home after feeling a sense of peer pressure due to her neighbors’ lights. Frank’s wife bought some new lights to put on their porch railing. She also ordered a pre-lit Christmas tree that seemed to be marked down 75%.

Frank was involved in three parades during a 24-hour period. He and Jere represented East Tennessee PBS in the WIVK Christmas Parade on the evening of December 3. Frank and Becca James announced the Karns Christmas Parade on YouTube on the morning of December 4. Frank and Heather Waliga announced the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade on the evening of December 4.
Frank saw many people he knew at the parades. In the WIVK parade, he talked with several people from WNML radio and WVLT TV. At Rocky Hill, he recognized a guy who used to run a funeral home and met a woman who resembles HGTV star Joanna Gaines.
Kathryn is in Newark, New Jersey. She takes the train into Manhattan to meet with opera composers and to audition for opera companies from around the country. She loves being in New York when the stores are decorated for Christmas. She used an aria from The Copper Queen in her auditions.
This past weekend, Frank and Kathryn were voice actors in the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville. Frank was excited about the spice tea that is available for the actors backstage.
Frank went to a retail store that required masks. He didn’t have one in his pocket so he searched his car but couldn’t find a mask there either. He did have a thick paper napkin from Aubrey’s. Kathryn was surprised to be recognized while wearing a mask.
