142 - Is It Still

Krisha has been working full time at a theater in Pigeon Forge. Frank congratulates her on accomplishing the dream of those who have a “day job” and wish to work in the entertainment business full-time.

In addition to acting and stage-managing, Krisha has been learning how to clog dance and how to play the mandolin. Next she will learn to be a stunt diver in the show.

Krisha’s journey of self-discovery reminds Frank of a terrible song called “I’ve Never Been to Me.” Frank’s wife has filled in on some See More Smokies episodes. Frank chose locations that would be too far away for Krisha to attend.

Krisha hasn’t seen any cicadas in Sevier County. Frank thinks his property is the border for the cicadas in his neighborhood. He has cicadas in his yard but there are none across the street.

Frank’s daughter has to sweep the cicadas off her porch to avoid stepping on them. Frank Jr. explained that the 17-year cicadas and the 13-year cicadas are successful because their life cycles are relatively large prime numbers.

Frank saw a David Attenborough video about the mating call of the 17-year cicadas. Attenborough snapped his fingers to imitate the sound of the female cicada and made a male cicada follow the snapping sound.

141 - Joy to You and Me

Krisha fell backstage and had to go to a walk-in clinic to get treated. Frank’s wife, Jere the Brave, filled in as today’s guest co-host. Regis Philbin’s wife used to fill in for Kathie Lee and Kelly.

Frank needed a cup of coffee before recording today’s show. He had saved packets of coffee from motel rooms over the years. He soaked a coffee packet in hot water like you would with a teabag.

East Tennessee PBS Scholars’ Bowl 2021 premieres at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 10. Frank will be on “Live at Five at Four” on WBIR-TV today to promote Scholars’ Bowl. He will be on live from their outdoor weather porch.

On Friday, Frank recorded Zoom interviews with WATE-TV in Knoxville and WJHL-TV in Johnson City. He downloaded the WJHL app and tried to make a screen recording of the newscast while he was having dinner at a restaurant with Jere and another couple.

Jere was surprised to receive a hydrangea plant for Mother’s Day. Their kids thought about ordering the gift online but decided instead to send money to Frank via PayPal and have him buy the plant and an Amazon gift card. Frank bought the gifts on Friday but tried to hide the PayPal transfer from Jere until Monday.

Jere and Frank were about to do some work in the yard when their neighbor Ted asked them to look at his hydrangea tree, which has weeds and honeysuckle growing in the middle of it. Ted said he started to cut the weeds but was forced to stop due to allergies. Frank says that Ted used the old Tom Sawyer trick on Frank and Jere.

140 - Remove External Dive

Frank was advised to leave the pool pump running all winter. In previous years, a crew would close the pool and turn off the pump. This year, the water was much cleaner when the pool crew removed the cover.

A woman approached Frank at a fundraiser and told him that her husband was the one who broke Frank’s diving board. It happened several years ago when Frank was out of town and the woman’s sister was keeping an eye on the pool for Frank.

Krisha thinks she has worked up the nerve to go on a helicopter flight over the Smokies. Frank and his daughter once went on a daring helicopter flight above Los Angeles with a radio traffic reporter.

The former Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre has a new tenant as of this month. Frank saw some of the costumes from the theatre being used in a high school production of 42nd Street.

One of the high school students in the play has the last name Valderrama. Krisha went to high school with Wilmer Valderrama of That ‘70s Show.

The lead character, Peggy Sawyer, was played by Kristin Farley’s daughter Madison. She taught herself how to tap dance before the audition. The actress who plays Peggy needs to be the best dancer in the cast.

139 - Stall Tactics

Krisha & Frank enjoyed the Moonshine History Tour at Tennessee Shine Co. Frank liked the display about the connection between moonshine and stock car racing. Krisha didn’t want Frank to touch the electric chair display but he threw the switch anyway.

After the moonshine tour, Frank excitedly texted Krisha that the new Mapco was offering free fountain drinks that day. He saw several corporate-types wearing khaki slacks and polo shirts while they were standing around in preparation for the ribbon cutting.

Frank used the convenience store’s restroom and could hear a man in the next stall who was talking on his phone. The man dropped his phone and it slid into Frank’s stall. Frank offered to return it but the man retrieved it with his fingertips. As Frank was washing his hands, the man with the phone passed by the sink, paused and then took a dry paper towel to wipe his unwashed hands.

An enthusiastic woman was getting a free milkshake for herself. She encouraged another woman to put her small cup back and get a large milkshake because they were free that day.

Krisha & Frank are recording this week’s shows in Krisha’s living room. Frank says it feels like an “away game” for him. Krisha changed banks and got a new ATM card. In the process of removing her old card from Amazon, the podcast’s debit card was charged $12 for one of her subscriptions. Meanwhile, Frank saw the errant charge on the bank statement and thought it might be fraudulent. He called the bank but never thought to ask Krisha. She looked at their ledger and saw that Frank had typed “theft” in red, in bold, and in all-caps.

Krisha and her boyfriend had a contest to see who could accumulate the most free pens at area businesses. During the course of a day, they gathered 48 pens.

Frank was brainstorming titles for Friday’s episode and asked his two children for help. He had considered “Puppetry Amigos,” “Puppetry of Life,” and “They Call It Puppet Love.” Meaghan thought of “A Show of Hands,” which became the actual title. Frank Jr. suggested “Puppet… We’ll Do It Live.”

One of Krisha’s co-workers questioned the thumbnail on Saturday’s YouTube episode. It was a screengrab from when Krisha joked that she used moonshine as mouthwash each morning. Frank asked if she was “lying or truthing” and believed her when she said “truthing.”

137 - A Show of Hands

Frank’s wife Jere brought home some items from his mother’s house, including two antique chairs. Krisha goes to the living room to see the chairs. Frank didn’t know that his mom used to like telling the story of how Frank bought the chairs for her in the summer after she was widowed.

Frank’s wife also brought home the puppets that Frank had as a child. They remind Krisha of some of the puppets from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Krisha didn’t react well to an attempt at puppet therapy for her ADD as a child. She was given Ritalin but finally found help by taking dance classes.

Krisha has been training to be a stage manager at the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud. She finds that she really loves running the sound board at the theater.

Her intense work schedule leaves her exhausted on her one day off per week. Frank thought she slept all day because of her second vaccine shot but she said it was because of the long hours at work.

The nurse asked Frank about his “little friend” when he got his second shot. He was prepared for side effects. He took a nap and had chicken noodle soup at the ready however he had no reaction to the shot.

136 - Coin Toss

Krisha is wearing a Hatfield & McCoy shirt because this episode was recorded on a chilly day. Frank realizes that he should buy himself a Krisha & Frank shirt.

Frank has gotten a new roof and new gutters. The installer said that he likes putting quality gutters on customers’ “forever homes” better than putting cheaper gutters on a house that is about to go on the market. He said that Frank will die before these gutters need to be replaced.

Frank wanted to take a batch of coins to his bank but didn’t want to pay the coin-counting fee. He also wanted to avoid the coin-counting machine at the supermarket because of the fee. He read online that he could get full value for his coins if he took payment in the form of a gift card.

135 - Tomb Rater

Frank received a cemetery satisfaction survey in the mail. It has 55 questions about his experience with his mother’s burial. Krisha asks about the word columbarium, which is like a mausoleum for cremated remains.

Frank has other family members in the same area of the national cemetery as his parents. When Frank’s mom was buried, the cemetery engraved a new headstone for both his mom and dad but wouldn’t let him have the old one.

Krisha plans to record a bluegrass version of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. She is dating a musician who will help her with the album.

Frank gave Krisha some of his dried figs when she needed a serving of fiber. They worked faster than expected.
