Episode 0106 - “It’s Electric“
Wednesday Aug 09, 2023
Wednesday Aug 09, 2023
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Becca James. Strong thunderstorms on August 7, 2023 knocked out the power at Becca’s house. At the time of this recording, she had been without electricity for over 17 hours and the utility company predicted that it would be another 13 hours before power is restored.
Becca got a new smartwatch, which is waterproof. Frank asks if it makes a noise after being immersed in water like his daughter’s Apple watch does. Frank and Becca used to work for a company that asked them to wear Fitbits to lower their insurance premiums. Frank sprained his ankle while jogging in place in an effort to increase his step count.
Becca was up early to buy ice to keep her perishable food cold while the power is out. Frank saw many photos on Facebook of huge trees that fell in several Knoxville neighborhoods.
After the storm, Becca picked up her kids from daycare and brought them to the YMCA, which had power. Her husband picked up pizza for dinner and they finally used some of the camping supplies they’ve had for years. Frank was worried Becca would cancel today’s recording session but she was happy to come over and put on her makeup in Frank’s air-conditioned house.
It was difficult for Becca’s kids to fall asleep without their customary white noise generator. Frank’s grandson Artie listens to thunderstorm noises to fall asleep. One night while Artie and Timmy were visiting, they listened to a real thunderstorm on the Amazon Echo instead. Artie uses the Echo to call his parents by telling the device their ten-digit phone numbers.

Frank hid his freeze-dried tortoise Mo while his grandchildren visited. Frank couldn’t find Mo this morning until he opened the container with the BoneZones merchandise. Becca had not heard the story of Mo’s preservation by Al Holmes Taxidermy.
Frank put Mo next to a hydrangea flower that he picked this morning. His wife brought home some houseplants from her office for Frank to nurse back to life.
Frank and Becca are both trying to lose a few pounds. Frank said it was especially difficult while his grandchildren visited. They are accustomed to eating “lunch dessert.” One day they made popsicles with orange soda. Another day they went to a hot dog restaurant that also serves Blue Bell ice cream.
Adam Ragusea posted a recipe for making ice cream with dry ice. Frank called several businesses in search of dry ice. He told a regular ice company that he was a fan of their ice with a hole in the middle. The dry ice cream tasted like a soda float due to the carbonic acid from the dry ice. Frank used fig syrup to make some fig flavored ice cream.
Frank and Jere made imitation orange chicken with dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets. The sauce contains orange marmalade, barbeque sauce and soy sauce.

Frank and Becca hosted the Karns Fairest of the Fair Pageant this past weekend. The Karns Fair organizers asked Becca if she and Frank would host the livestream of the Karns Christmas Parade again this year.
Madison Clabough was chosen as Fairest of the Fair and Bailey McNew was chosen as Junior Fairest of the Fair. They make their first official appearance at the Karns Community Fair on July 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Karns High School. Details at https://www.karnsfair.org/
Frank mentions that July is named for Julius Caesar and August is named for Augustus Caesar. September through December are named for the numerals seven through ten.
Becca wore her ballgown to Walmart to buy vanilla extract because her husband was making zucchini bread while she was at the pageant.
Frank had researched and memorized a list of fireworks displays in East Tennessee and in the Adirondacks for his radio shows. His wife asked him to research things for her to do in the Washington DC area on the Fourth. He suggested they visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
Becca and her family went to a friend’s house for the Fourth of July. Frank stayed home from about 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 2 to about 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 6.

94-year-old Marshal Andy Smalls recently recorded his final episodes of Riders of the Silver Screen at East Tennessee PBS with a live studio audience and a cake to celebrate Andy’s retirement. Frank went to the event and got an apron with Marshal Andy’s picture on it.
Frank asked Becca about some of the current events questions for the next season of Tennessee Scholars’ Bowl. One of the questions is about a huge pile of unsold clothing in the Atacama Desert. Becca helped Frank reword a question about Dua Lipa.
Two of Frank’s grandchildren, Charlie and Lucy, are visiting this week. Last night they had scrambled eggs and bacon for dinner. Jere cooked uncured bacon, which reminded Frank of a Scholars’ Bowl question about feral hogs being poisoned with a chemical used to cure bacon.
Charlie reminded Frank that they planned to share a breba crop fig from the Negronne fig plant. Frank recorded a video of them picking the fig and later cutting it into four pieces.
Frank is annoyed that the bronzer makeup he uses now has ridges under the product as a way of putting less in each package. He recently bought more bronzer for Scholars’ Bowl and for Up Close with Frank Murphy. Laura Beth Wells is Frank’s guest on the next episode of Up Close, which will air at 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 on East Tennessee PBS.

Episode 0104 - “To the Pole, Bat”
Wednesday Jun 28, 2023
Wednesday Jun 28, 2023
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn says she is 5’ 4”. Frank asks if her family measured the children’s height on a door or wall. Frank’s daughter saved a door jamb with her sons’ heights when their family moved to a larger house.
Pool owners often have to deal with dead critters in the pool. Sometimes the animals can be rescued in time. Frank saved a bat from drowning in the pool. It clung to the fence all day while it rested and dried off.
Frank’s wife Jere cooked steaks on the grill on Father’s Day. Frank taught his kids to sing the Father’s Day song that Groucho Marx used to sing. They changed the lyrics slightly to say they were giving him a box of frozen meat instead of a necktie. Kathryn sent her father a fresh cheesecake via a restaurant delivery service.

Kathryn has officially announced Marble City Opera’s 11th season. She had revealed the information on episode 0101 of the Frank & Friends Show. Frank has noticed that Google Maps alters its list of “recent searches” based on the day of the week. For example, it moves his church to the top of the list on Sundays. Frank also noticed that Google Docs asks if he wants to open a specific document that he often opens around a certain time of day.

Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank is excited about the longest day of the year on Wednesday.
Frank became a Kansas City Barbeque Society Certified Barbeque Judge and learned how to judge pork, chicken, ribs, and beef brisket.
On Saturday, June 24, Frank will announce the winners at the Big BBQ Bash in Maryville. The contest is a fundraiser for the Helen Ross McNabb Foundation’s Military Services. Learn more at https://mcnabbfoundation.org/campaigns/military-services/

Listener April attended opening night of Marble City Opera’s production of Susannah on June 8, 2023. She wore her Frank & Friends Show bucket hat for a photo with Kathryn.
Frank and his wife Jere attended the second performance. Kathryn was glad that Frank liked the music in Susannah. After the performance, he attempted a joke about disliking modern operas that have “that atonal s***” but the joke fell flat. Kathryn mentions that there are tritones in some modern operas.
Kathryn applied for and received several grants for Marble City Opera. She emailed the board members to tell them the good news and several board members hit “reply all” to congratulate her.
Kathryn needed Frank’s address the last three times she came over. Frank noticed that his Google Maps app can display the addresses of people in his contact list. Frank looked up his own address on Google Maps and could see his own shadow in their aerial photo of his property.
On the next episode, Frank will tell Kathryn about a critter he saved from drowning in the pool.

Episode 0102 - “Do You Smell That?”
Thursday Jun 01, 2023
Thursday Jun 01, 2023
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn will sing the title role in Marble City Opera’s production of Susannah on June 8, 9, and 10, 2023.
Frank thinks he smells cigarettes from the work crew across the street because the whole-house fan is drawing in air through the open windows.
A work crew has been building a swimming pool across the street since March. Frank’s neighbor rented a port-a-potty for the workers. The neighbor’s children have been playing with their pool toys in the front yard while they wait for the pool to be finished.
Frank was in his pajamas working on his 104.9 LakeFM radio show when he got an email asking him to appear on Living East Tennessee on WATE-TV that afternoon. He got himself camera-ready and made it to WATE by 3:15. When he walked in, he blew an air kiss to Tala Shatara but new co-host Kerjan Donovan saw it and was surprised. Right before they began Frank’s interview, Kerjan noticed that Tala was still wearing earrings from an earlier segment with Kendra Scott jewelry.

Frank has already started editing new current events questions for the 2024 season of Tennessee Scholars’ Bowl. One of the producers at East Tennessee PBS has asked Frank to find funny segments from the 2023 season so they can use them in social media posts over the summer.
CBS Mornings recently had a segment about high school quiz shows. The reporter had been a quiz show contestant when he was in high school. The report featured some academic quiz shows that air on CBS affiliates in their markets. You can watch the report here: https://youtu.be/PRdCxMkTXyg
Kathryn attended the Opera America conference and spoke up about singers who want to work in management but still continue singing. It’s common among conductors but rare among singers. The industry mistakenly assumes singers going into management will give up singing.
Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner for her birthday. The restaurant would not seat them without a reservation. Frank asked if he could make a reservation and got a reservation for twenty minutes later.
Kathryn will sing in a concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, & Stilettos at Cherokee Caverns on August 19, 2023. Season tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/events/seasonticket

Friday May 26, 2023
Friday May 26, 2023
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Kathryn posted on social media that she was going to start drinking coffee and Frank suggested some roasts but Kathryn changed her mind.
Frank cut an orange lily to put in a vase for the show. The flowers remind him of his birthday because the lilies at his childhood home in New York would bloom in mid-June. In Tennessee, they bloom a month earlier.
Kathryn has been in Baton Rouge, Huntsville, and Pittsburgh. The Opera America conference was in Pittsburgh this year. The opening reception was on a boat. Kathryn’s husband James had to wait in the standby line because he hadn’t pre-registered for the cruise on the app for the conference.
For Marble City Opera’s next season, Kathryn is planning a production of Puccini’s Il Tabarro on a party barge on June 20, 2024; The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024; and The Doctor and the Devils on June 6 and 8, 2024. A concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, & Stilettos at Cherokee Caverns will be on August 19, 2023. Season tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/events/seasonticket

Frank had trouble hearing his wife Jere in a noisy environment. However when she sings to him, he hears her loud and clear. While watching the recent coronation on TV, Jere sang along as the church choir sang “Zadok the Priest.”
Jere received a gift of stainless steel chopsticks. The package is entirely written in Chinese. Frank used the Google Translate app on his phone to learn what it said. There was a warning to not put it in the “Huiboyi.”
Frank was glad that a nonjudgmental plumber who unclogged his bathroom sink. Frank thinks that the glob of material that came out was congealed hair gel.
Jere received two large coffee mugs that say Volvo. Frank wants to give them to his sister, who has two Volvo cars but doesn’t want to pay the postage to mail them to New York. Kathryn promises to give the mugs to Frank’s sister if he were to die and his sister were to attend the funeral.

Episode 0100 - “Wholly Mackerel”
Tuesday May 16, 2023
Tuesday May 16, 2023
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Sarah Roberto, who claims she will buy and wear a Frank & Friends Show bucket hat on a future episode.
Viewer Rene says Frank should pre-pay for a cemetery plot and funeral services. Sarah wants to be cremated and put in a columbarium.
Frank and his wife wanted to have chicken for dinner. He searched for chicken restaurants on Google Maps but all the results were for fried chicken. He tried searching for “pollo” instead and discovered Five Cousins Pollo a la Brasa on Merchant Drive.
Sarah asks about the various social media that the Frank & Friends Show use. She likes TikTok and says Frank is the right age for Facebook. Frank tells her about the time he was asked for an autograph during a medical procedure and another time when he didn’t want to wake up.
Sarah’s dog can make her emotional. She jokes that she would save the dog before saving her husband in a fire. Frank jokes about her first husband even though he tried not to do so.

Frank’s friend Bean suggested that he create a podcast called Frank & Figs. Sarah agrees that figs are a niche subject. Sarah has a brown thumb. Frank doesn’t enjoy gardening but has started thinking of it as analogous to going to the gym. Jere made a map of where Frank planted the cuttings he tried to root over the winter.
When Sarah mentions frankfurters, Frank asks what type of hot dogs she likes. Frank is thinking of taking his grandson back to D & B Hotdogs this summer to get an Elvis Pocket for dessert. Sarah likes corn dogs from her time working for the Tennessee Valley Fair.
Sarah says the news producers used to tell her that their TV reporters loved deep-fried fair food. In reality the reporter would spit out the food as soon as the camera was off.
Frank’s chiropractor suggested that Frank try eating canned mackerel. Frank opened a 4.4 ounce can of mackerel and put it on top of a salad and found that he enjoyed it. Jere bought Frank a 15 ounce can of mackerel because it was the same price as the 4.4 ounce can.
Frank recently saw a display of cupcakes on display. They had plastic 2023 decorations in the icing that reminded Frank of the cupcakes he saw there at New Year’s Eve. Jere said they were for graduation parties.
