Episode 0090 - “Good Craic”
Thursday Dec 22, 2022
Thursday Dec 22, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by Becca James, who is interested in going on a See More Smokies adventure. Frank says he used muscle memory to put on his bronzer. Frank is starting his press tour for Tennessee Scholars’ Bowl.
Frank’s wife Jere made a batch of cracker candy. She pours melted sugar and butter over a tray of crackers and then places chocolate chips on top. The hot tray goes in the freezer until the candy is solid. Jere was worried that Frank would be startled when she dropped the cookie sheet on the floor to break the candy into pieces.
Becca made some peppermint bark but failed to use parchment paper. Her twin boys helped spread crushed candy canes over the melted chocolate. She usually makes Pizzelle cookies for Christmas.
Jere makes chocolate chip cookies at Christmas time. Frank asks if all cookies are Christmas cookies. Gingerbread cookies are his favorite. Frank’s daughter sent him a video of her kids destroying a gingerbread house with a mallet followed by another video of them peacefully eating the gingerbread.

Frank got a text from his friend Jim who is a widower. Frank took a screenshot of himself at the funeral for Jim’s wife Tracy. Jim sent Frank a text that said, “I thought of you today. I was listening to the Weird Al song “Tacky” and it got to the verse about live-tweeting a funeral, taking selfies with the deceased…” Jim also sent Frank a link to the music video: https://youtu.be/zq7Eki5EZ8o
The late Brandon Gibson is pictured on the front of Blank Newspaper. Kathryn Frady’s eulogy is included in the retrospectives of Brandon’s life. Many people from the local opera and theater scenes attended Brandon’s funeral. Frank says the funeral was both hilariously funny and tragically sad.
One of the first things that Becca knew about Frank was that he and Dave Morales would race to be the first to notify the other about celebrity deaths.

Episode 0089 - “She Could Make the Pants”
Thursday Dec 15, 2022
Thursday Dec 15, 2022
Frank Murphy and Becca James hosted the YouTube broadcast of the Karns Christmas Parade on December 3. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/x3Jf1SqMM5I
Nancy Anderson wrote in the Shopper News that “Murphy and James are quickly becoming the go-to emcees for Karns events.” They hosted the 2022 Fairest of the Fair contest, as well as the 2021 parade.
Becca is the Director of Marketing for Knoxville Area Transit. She recently planned holiday events for customers and employees.
Frank shows Becca some of the old questions from Scholars’ Bowl. He and his wife rewrote the questions for the 2023 season of the show. After Scholars’ Bowl, Frank recorded four episodes of Up Close. He interviewed Sam Venable, Patricia Robledo, Aram Demirjian, and Brian Salesky.
Frank voiced six characters in the live presentations of the Nativity Pageant of Knoxville. He was Isaiah, Gabriel, Centurion, Shepherd, Wise Man, and Herod. Frank bases the Wise Man’s voice on his neighbor.
Frank was adding some trash to a bag in his garbage can at 11 p.m. on Monday when his neighbor drove home and pulled into the garage. Frank wonders if the neighbor saw him because he didn’t say hello.

Becca noticed that one of Frank’s neighbors has a 12-foot Halloween skeleton dressed in a Santa hat and shirt. At night it looks like the skeleton is placing the star atop an inflatable Christmas tree. Comedian Matt Ward lives in Ohio and made a Facebook post about people near him who put Christmas decorations on their 12-foot skeletons.
Becca says her husband would decorate their house like Clark Griswold if she let him. She thought someone cut through their Christmas lights and pasted a photo of the cut wires on Facebook. They later realized that bunnies chewed through the wires.
Becca and her husband take down their Christmas decorations around New Year’s Day. Frank and his wife are usually late putting up their decorations and therefore keep the decorations up longer. We are still in the third week of Advent. The twelve days of Christmas begin on December 25. Christmastide lasts forty days until Candlemas, which is February 2. Groundhog Day is also celebrated on Candlemas.

Special Episode - Knoxville Children’s Theatre
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Special Episode - “Knoxville Children’s Theatre”
Frank Murphy visited the dress rehearsal for “The Carol” at Knoxville Children’s Theatre at the invitation of cast member Eden Carnes, who plays Debbie / Mrs. Cratchit. “The Carol” was written and directed by KCT artistic director Steve Sherman. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through December 18.
A community theatre is trying to keep its head above water and when famous stage actor Sir Anthony Stewart is unable to play Scrooge in their annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” their technical director and house understudy has to step in. The play is a farce that includes the guy who takes theatre a little too seriously, the girl who is always late, the guy who doesn’t prepare, the spoiled grandson of Sir Anthony, lots of teenage drama, and a major error by the new marketing person that throws everything into a tailspin.

Friday Dec 02, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by author Gene Masters, who has published seven books including the war novel Silent Warriors and the mystery novel Bobby Doyle Is Missing. Frank is currently reading The Dry Cleaner.
Frank took a break from recording podcast episodes while he was recording 58 episodes of Scholars’ Bowl and 4 episodes of Up Close for East Tennessee PBS during October and November. The shows will air in 2023.
Frank and his wife Jere took on the additional responsibility of preparing the questions used on Scholars’ Bowl. They also wrote new questions and rewrote many of the old ones.
Gene’s bestselling book is Silent Warriors, which is about a submarine captain during the war. The Dry Cleaner is the first in a series of books featuring detective Rich Vittelli. Gene is currently writing the fourth Vitelli book.
Frank’s neighbor Nancy marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as a toy soldier with the Hallmark float. Joss Stone sang on the float. Nancy brought back a box of cookies from Palermo Pastry Shop in Brooklyn for Frank and Jere.

Frank and Heather Waliga will be the public address announcers for the Rocky Hill Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. The parade is preceded by a Christmas festival in the Rocky Hill shopping center. Cruz Contreras and Emi Sunshine will each perform during the festival. Find details at https://rockyhillchristmasparade.org/
Gene has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, a master’s degree in environmental engineering, and a PhD in civil engineering. In his career, most of his work was in chemical engineering. Dr. Frank Jr. PhD recently received a job offer. Frank is hoping he and his wife can live in their son’s basement someday.
One of the teams competing in Scholars’ Bowl had never watched the show. They fared poorly against a team that studied past episodes and could anticipate some of the questions before Frank finished reading them. Gene and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD sent in some new Scholars’ Bowl questions.

Frank & Friends Show 0087
Friday Sep 30, 2022
Friday Sep 30, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee. David says that the music chose him because he has the type of voice that can sing opera and fill a 4,000 seat theater without a microphone.
Frank’s parents went to operas and Broadway shows. Frank and his wife saw a notice on the Roku screensaver to click and watch the musical Heathers. He was confused by the character Veronica and was waiting for the mean girls who say “fetch” and sing “Santa Baby.” When the mean Heathers came into the cafeteria, he realized his mistake.
David recommends watching Shrek the Musical starring Sutton Foster. David’s daughter has been in several local productions, taking after her parents. David’s wife is actress Laura Beth Wells.
Frank was driving behind a school bus on Middlebrook Pike and was surprised when the bus stopped in front of Food City. Two kids got out and walked to cars in the Food City parking lot.
Frank and his wife Jere buy gift cards at the supermarket to get extra gas points. They pass the nozzle to fill both cars on the same discount. They were supposed to meet at the gas station. Frank’s GPS said he would get there two minutes before the gas station closed at 10:00 p.m. Shortly after he pulled up alongside Jere’s car, the gas station attendant turned out the lights at 9:58 p.m.
David and his daughter Lily went to the library shortly before closing. Lily asked the librarians for recommendations as the staff was starting to turn out the lights.
Frank and his wife used to make back-to-back appointments at the optometrist. When Frank called to make appointments, he was told the doctor had a new policy prohibiting family members from having adjacent appointments. Frank is convinced that he is the cause for the new policy. David thinks that Frank and Jere might need to have their eyes dilated.
Frank accidentally spilled rubbing alcohol on his leg while cleaning Jere’s Fitbit. He assumed it would evaporate but he should have washed it off. The next day he had a rash from the chemical burn caused by the alcohol. It was almost as bad as the time he went to the bathroom after chopping jalapeno peppers.
David is wearing a Darth Vader t-shirt. Frank mentions the meme comparing Darth Vader without his helmet to Billy Joel playing a harmonica. Frank often looks for Billy Joel news to mention on 104.9 LakeFM.

Frank & Friends Show 0086
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Tuesday Sep 27, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee.
Frank tells David about Taylor Swift’s cover of “September.” She sings “Do you remember the 28th night of September.” Earth, Wind & Fire sing about the 21st of September, which is nine months before Frank’s birthday.
Frank enjoyed watching David in the Metropolitan Opera production of Rigoletto, set in Rat-Pack era Las Vegas. David wore a custom-made jacket. HBO’s Behind the Candelabra also wanted the fabric.
David played Angelotti in Marble City Opera’s production of Tosca. Marble City Opera’s upcoming shows are Heartbreak Express, The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace, and Susannah.
David has a full-time job as a lecturer and coach in vocal performance at UT. He hints about an appearance in an opera this season.
Frank has a theory that WCBS-FM in New York plays extra Billy Joel songs because he is local to the area. He also thinks that other classic hits stations around the country base their playlists on the Joel-heavy playlist of WCBS.
Frank and his wife Jere went to a late dinner at a restaurant with a popular bar. They thought they heard a terrible karaoke singer but it turned out to be an entertainer playing his keyboard and singing Billy Joel and Elton John songs. David likes to sing “Baby Got Back” when doing karaoke.
David likes watching Emmanuel the Emu on YouTube. The videos originally appeared on TikTok. Frank thinks he gets more than enough emu on YouTube because of Liberty Mutual’s commercials.
Frank associates LMU with Lincoln Memorial University. Their team name is the Railsplitters and their mascot is Abe, as in Lincoln. The team name at David’s high school was the Fighting Quakers, which was changed to the Hustling Quakers. His college’s team was the Battling Bishops. He then went to a university with a team named the Terriers.
Frank’s theory is that team mascots should be predators like the Hawks but not the Doves. David suggests a team named the Vultures. David saw a dove with a smaller bird in its talons.
Frank was the emcee for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge at the Tennessee Valley Fair. There seemed to be an unusually large number of volunteers eager to help with the doughnuts. He thought he was being recognized by a viewer or listener but it turned out to be his backyard neighbor.
Several teenagers have started cutting through Frank’s yard from the neighboring subdivision. A homeowner from the other subdivision came up the hill to ask if they were Frank’s kids because they also cut through his yard.

Frank & Friends Show 0085
Friday Sep 23, 2022
Friday Sep 23, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank bought rechargeable batteries at the suggestion of Erik Dobell. He got some no-name batteries that came in a plain wrapper from Amazon.
Frank, his wife Jere, and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD went to the Dexter Cider Mill in Michigan. They bought some McIntosh apples, ginger snap cookie mix, apple cider doughnuts, fresh cider, and hard cider. The doughnuts are made with apple cider syrup. The taste reminded Frank and Jere of Crutchley Crullers, which used to be sold in the Hamptons.
Frank and Dr. Frank Jr. PhD opened two different flavors of hard cider but were surprised how much was in the bottle. Frank brought back two 500ml bottles of hard cider to share with Kathryn. They will drink the traditional hard cider today and save the bourbon barrel cider for another day.
Frank and Jere bought new vitamin organizers for the trip. His friend Kumi urged him to take vitamin C, vitamin D, melatonin, and zinc every day. Frank got concerned because he forgot to take his nightly vitamins and zinc one night. He got a scratchy throat the next day but now thinks it was an allergy to mold.
Frank also takes some immunity boosting gummies each day. Water leaked into the container with his Airborne and elderberry gummies, partly dissolving them. Kathryn accurately guessed that Frank drank the melted gummies.
Speaking of gummies, Jere bought some “Michi-gummies” as a gift for the Rocket Brothers. Kathryn thinks the Michigan-shaped gummies look like slightly misfored animal shapes. Kathryn and her husband James once went apple-picking in Michigan.
There were picnic tables overlooking the Huron River behind the cider mill. There were a lot of wasps trying to get to the cider and doughnuts. Frank ate his doughnut while standing on a picnic table to be near the huge kitchen exhaust fan. The exhaust blew the wasps away from Frank.
Frank arranged to meet his friend Bean at a Cracker Barrel halfway between Crossville and Knoxville. Frank told the hostess that he was there to meet a tall guy. When Bean walked in, she asked if he was there to meet the short guy.
Bean has been doing his podcast from his wife’s bathroom. Frank wonders why he didn’t use his own bathroom.
Frank has an idea for fake Airpods. They would allow you to ignore people because you’re pretending to be listening to something important.
Kathryn and her husband had an encounter with a woman at Jason’s Deli who accused James of stealing her free ice cream. Kathryn saw her again a few days later at the church where Opéra Louisiane has its offices.

Frank Murphy is joined by comedian and author Alex Stokes. Alex is known as “The Beer Comedian.” His Waking Up in a Brewery podcast can be found at https://www.facebook.com/wakingupinabrewery or through his website, https://www.beercomedian.com/
Alex has written several books including Messing with Tourists: Stupid Answers to Stupid Questions. He got much of the material while working in a ticket booth on the Gatlinburg strip. He finished writing a third installment of the book series but his laptop crashed and he had to rewrite the whole book from scratch.
When Alex visited colleges with his son, he stopped at breweries along the way to book future comedy gigs. Frank suggests that Alex check out the breweries near Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Frank Jr. recently completed his PhD.
One of Alex’s sponsors is the Tennessee Cider Company, where Frank and Kathryn Frady recorded the See More Smokies Insider Edition episode found here: https://youtu.be/MqC_MeNJno8
Frank, his wife Jere, and Dr. Frank Jr. visited the Dexter Cider Mill in Michigan. They bought a jar of maple syrup as a gift for the neighbor who watched their house. Alex thinks it looks like bourbon. Frank also bought some hard ciders to have when Kathryn Frady visits.
Jere bought a Graeter’s Ice Cream gift card to get extra gas points at the supermarket. They had planned to stop at the Graeter’s in downtown Cincinnati but decided to avoid traffic by continuing on to the Graeter’s in downtown Lexington instead. When they got to Lexington, they got stuck in traffic headed to Rupp Arena for a country music concert.
Alex would go to a brewery to write his books, rather than stay home and get distracted. Alex and Chris Travis have so far recorded Waking Up in a Brewery at 28 of the 32 breweries in Knoxville. Alex and Chris have started their own version of bar trivia called “Waking Up In A Brewery Presents: This Beer Tastes Funny!”
Frank and several others were tagged in a Facebook memory by a former co-worker. When Frank looked at the list of the other former colleagues who were tagged, he discovered that one of them had unfriended him.
On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Waking Up in a Brewery will host the Bruce Street Brewfest in Sevierville. Learn more here: https://brucestreetbrewfest.com/

Friday Sep 16, 2022
Friday Sep 16, 2022
Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer and executive Kathryn Frady. Kathryn says she remembered how to sit up straight on camera and was complimented for it when doing another video interview.
Frank made a YouTube short of Kathryn singing at Moonshine Mountain Coaster. His friend Bean used the audio during the intro of an episode of the podcast A Cup of Tea and a Chat. He also made shorts with video clips of Jeff Detrow and Nate Evans.
Kathryn was mentioned on the podcast Quitters Never Give Up. They played a clip of Kathryn’s story about the man who showed up at her office to tell her that he wrote her an angry email but didn’t send it.
One of Kathryn’s employees at Opéra Louisiane admitted to “stalking” her online before Kathryn was hired. She discovered that Kathryn was “fabulous.”
Kathryn staged an opera performance of Bon Appetit paired with Leonard Bernstein’s The Four Recipes in Baton Rouge last week. The libretto comes from an episode of The French Chef, starring Julia Child.
Frank used to watch The French Chef when he was young. His sister once baked a Bacardi Rum Cake that was photographed for magazine ads and a recipe card. Frank met Julia Child when he booked her for an interview on KLOS-FM. Frank and his wife saw Julia Child’s kitchen in a museum.
Kathryn Frady, Whitney Wells, and Kayla Beard will sing in a concert called Stalactites, Sopranos, and Stilettos on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. inside Historic Cherokee Caverns. They will sing some opera arias and some musical theater songs. Tickets are $15 and are on sale at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets
Frank points out that Kathryn is half-British and has dual citizenship. King Charles III declared September 19 to be a bank holiday because of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. Since banks are closed and school is canceled in England, Frank thinks Kathryn should be obligated to cancel the Marble City Opera board meeting that day.
Kathryn has an apartment in downtown Baton Rouge. The building has a rooftop pool. Her dog Sasha is becoming a city dog when living in Baton Rouge.
Kathryn enjoys eating gulf fish like yellowtail and redfish. Her new favorite restaurant is Cecelia Creole Bistro, which serves boudin balls. The restaurant also serves Sazerac Rye. Frank texted Kathryn when he had a Sazerac in Michigan last week.
Kathryn has a full schedule of performances and events in Knoxville, Santa Fe, Baton Rouge, and Huntsville.

Frank Murphy is joined by comedian and author Alex Stokes. Alex is known as “The Beer Comedian.” His “Waking Up in a Brewery” podcast can be found at https://www.facebook.com/wakingupinabrewery or through his website, https://www.beercomedian.com/
Frank got a little sunburned and a little bit of a sugar rush while recording a video at the Tennessee Valley Fair. The video will be on YouTube later this week. It includes “Nana’s Gooey Butter Funnel Cake” and an appearance by Fairest of the Fair Katelyn Fedrick.
Alex credits Frank with getting him booked for a clean comedy gig at First Night Knoxville. Alex didn’t have clean material at the time and had to write a new act.
Frank read that comedians can make a living by doing a clean act at the “three Cs” - corporate, college, and cruise gigs. Some comedians would rather work blue so they can shock the audience into submission.
Alex Stokes went into comedy full-time around the same time that his wife Jenny went to school to become a veterinarian for zoo animals. Her favorite animals are tigers. Frank went to a photo shoot with two live tigers and radio hosts Mark & Brian.
Frank performed in an improv show with Einstein Simplified at Creepy Con. He went backstage 30 minutes before showtime and felt out of place as the only person not wearing a costume. In the show, Frank had to play an expert on the movie Beetlejuice, which he has only seen once.
Alex found it challenging to improvise when he was pulled onstage for a bit with Einstein Simplified. He is used to preparing his jokes in advance. Alex says some stand-up comics hate improv. Frank knew a Vegas comedian who hated improv and prop comics.
Frank says improvisers prepare for their shows by learning the rules of improv. They avoid denials and questions, for example. They have to listen, accept, and support their scene partner.
Alex tells about the value of having an opening act to warm up and help gauge the crowd. Dive bar gigs are hard when the crowd isn’t expecting comedy. One time another comedian got in a fistfight with an audience member right as Alex was about to go on. As Alex started, someone shouted out a reaction to the breaking news on the TV over Alex’s head.
Frank asks Alex if he is sad to hear someone famous died. Frank says he isn’t said to hear they died, he is sad that they actually died.
