Frank Murphy is joined by Elyssa Hurley of MEDIC Regional Blood Center as he donates platelets via apheresis. Frank’s platelets are more valuable to MEDIC than his unpopular whole blood type.
MEDIC often has incentive gifts for donors, such as Dollywood tickets or Tennessee Valley Fair tickets. Learn more at https://medicblood.org
Frank once saw a blood splatter demonstration at the National Forensic Academy in Oak Ridge. They used expired human blood from MEDIC.
There is a photo of Alex Grappin on the wall at MEDIC. Frank knows the Grappin family. Alex was a Boy of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Alex’s dad Tony is a frequent blood donor.
Elyssa was deferred from donating blood due to low iron. That also happened to Frank once. He was told to go eat a burger and come back the next day. Frank ate a bison burger before coming to MEDIC.
When Frank donates whole blood, he drinks a lot of extra fluids and is often finished in less time than other donors at the blood drive.
While in college, Frank signed up for a blood drive. While waiting for his appointment, he went for a ride in a military helicopter that was visiting the college campus. The helicopter didn’t have seats. The riders sat on the floor and strapped themselves to the wall. The back door of the copter stayed open during the flight. Upon landing, Frank was deferred from donating blood because his heart rate and blood pressure were too high.
When Frank worked for radio stations that sponsored blood drives, he would donate while working. He would often donate at the same time as TV news anchors and they would all post about it on social media.
Frank asks Elyssa about the pint of Sea Salt Caramel Blue Bell Ice Cream that he once received as a thank-you gift for donating blood. The flavor is not available in stores but can be found at some ice cream parlors, including D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream in Solway.
Frank was warned that he might get cold during apheresis. He brought along a Frank & Friends Show beach towel to use as a blanket but didn’t need it.
Elyssa’s parents moved to Tennessee from New York just before she was born. Frank says that makes her a Tennessee native but Elyssa’s mom says that she doesn’t have Tennessee blood in her veins.
Elyssa likes to visit the desert. She went to New Mexico and was surprised how cold it was when she went night swimming at her hotel. She wants to visit the Pacific northwest. She wants to visit the Grand Canyon. Frank tells her about his trip to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington.
Elyssa is interested in visiting Mount St. Helens. Frank looks online to see that Mount Rainier is also a volcano. Elyssa mentions the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park. Frank says the supervolcano is included in the SkyFly: Soar America ride at The Island in Pigeon Forge.
Elyssa is beginning a masters program in historic preservation and museum management. Frank asks if she has heard of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Elyssa tells Frank about writing a research paper discussing if Franklin Delano Roosevelt had polio or Guillain-Barré syndrome. Frank talks about the original goal of the March of Dimes was to eradicate polio. That’s part of the reason FDR is pictured on the dime. March of Dimes has since pivoted to help premature babies.

Frank & Friends Show 0078
Tuesday Aug 30, 2022

Frank Murphy’s friend Jeff Detrow is today’s co-host. Jeff says Frank has an “higo problem.” Higo is the Spanish word for fig.
Frank and his wife Jere haven’t had time to make jam or preserves with all the figs Frank has harvested. They started freezing figs on a cookie sheet to be processed later. Jeff is reminded of the dog meatballs that he prepares for his pets.
Frank wants to use the frozen figs to make smoothies. Jeff calls it the new açaí. Frank mentions that figs have a laxative effect. Jeff asks about the transitory time.
Jeff learned about transitory time after accidentally swallowing a dental crown. He once lost a crown during a radio interview with a celebrity but found it on the studio floor.
Frank appreciates that Jeff has a big vocabulary. Like Frank, Jeff solves the New York Times crossword puzzle daily. Frank recently solved a Monday puzzle in four minutes and 31 seconds. He and Jeff compare solve times for the weekend puzzles. Frank tends to overdo his hobbies and interests, which has been called “Franking it to eleven.”
Jeff thinks that Frank’s improv experience helps him think quickly while solving the crossword and vice versa. Frank credits improv with helping him in many aspects of life.
Come to the Secret City Improv Festival on September 30 and October 1, 2022 at the Historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Use the discount code FRANK at checkout for 25% off when purchasing tickets at https://secretcityimprovfest.com/tickets
Frank and his wife Jere went to the Irish Fest on the Hill in mid-August. Frank was the only one in his group who was interested in eating Irish food. They encountered their friend Ida who now lives downtown and could list dozens of restaurant recommendations within walking distance. They walked to the Old City and decided to try a restaurant called Southern Grit, which Jeff has also enjoyed.
The host said there would be a 45 minute wait for a table and that the group should go take a walk until they got a text that their table was ready. Frank ordered medium-hot chicken rather than the full Nashville-hot. The waiter said he could bring Frank some emergency milk if necessary.
The next day Frank, Jere, and their houseguests went to First Watch for brunch. Frank sensed that a lady at the next table was looking at their food so Frank explained to her what he, Jere, and the others had ordered.
Jeff jokes that leftovers should be up for grabs at pizza restaurants. Frank and Jere have driven to Maryville to eat at Jaboni’s, which is not far from where Jeff and Kristen live. Frank wanted to support a Facebook friend, Bart Fricks, who bought the Maryville location of Jaboni’s from the previous owner.
Frank also wanted to support Dan Goss, who left Downtown Grill & Brewery to open Point b in West Knoxville, near Gettysvue Country Club. Frank, Jere, and Artie Rocket ordered the s’mores board for dessert. Jeff recommends making s’mores with marshmallows that have chocolate filling. Point B had a variety of candy bars to make the s’mores.
Jeff wonders if Frank can expound on any topic. Frank says there is an improv game in which someone delivers an extemporaneous monologue on a word that the audience suggests. Frank once went to an improv festival in Frederick, Maryland and was asked to give a monologue on a word. He then appeared in a scene based on the monologue.
Frank points out that Jeff would improvise and speak extemporaneously on the radio. A late-night talk show has a huge staff to write a ten-minute monologue. Radio hosts have to fill four hours a day without a staff of writers.
Jeff’s birthday is October 1. Each year, Jeff told his Jeff & Jer Show listeners to say “Happy birthday Jeff” to get free admission to the San Diego Zoo on October 2 even though it was actually Founders Day and everyone got in free that day.
One time Jeff & Jer announc that their staff member Randy was going to jump a bus in the Jack Murphy Stadium parking lot. People imagined an Evel Knievel style stunt. Instead Randy used jumper cables to jump start the bus.

Frank Murphy interviews Russell Hitchcock of the band Air Supply on today’s episode. Air Supply will perform at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tennessee on Sunday, August 28, 2022. Any remaining tickets can be purchased at https://www.npacgreeneville.com/events/airsupply Air Supply’s website is https://airsupplymusic.com
Air Supply will soon release a new single called “Be Tough.” They recorded it in a new Los Angeles studio that houses musical instruments and mixing boards used by members of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell met on May 12, 1975, which was the first day of rehearsals for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Australia. Frank asks Russell which tenor roles he portrayed. Russell started in the chorus and became an understudy for Jesus, Judas, and Annas. He played Judas several times but played Jesus only once. The producer thought he had the wrong hair for the role.
Frank has seen Air Supply in concert three times. They had a sold-out show at the Tennessee Valley Fair on September 5, 2014. They performed at the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration on April 2, 2007.
In 1995, Frank met with Russell and Graham to ask them to perform at a KROQ Singles Party for “losers” on Valentine’s Day at an Elks Lodge in Santa Ana, California. Jimmy Kimmel arranged for a terrible comedian to be their opening act. The audience was also treated to macaroni and cheese, served buffet style.
Russell’s favorite Air Supply song is “All Out of Love,” which has become their anthem. “Lost in Love” is his second favorite.

Frank Murphy’s friend Kristen Detrow is today’s co-host. Frank’s friend Bean complimented Kristen’s previous appearance on the show.
Subscriber Rena’ recently adopted some rescue tortoises. She graciously sent a photo and video. Kristen’s daughter wanted a pet tortoise that she could name Mr. Sweatpants. Zoo Knoxville is known for its successful tortoise habitat. “Big Al”' the Aldabra tortoise follows us on Twitter and posts tortoise jokes on Tuesdays.
Kristen smuggled a baby snapping turtle into her college dorm room but eventually had to let it go back into the wild. Frank’s family had pet ducklings which they let loose in the Bronx River when they became ducks.
Frank is worried that he came across too strong the last time Kristen and her husband Jeff visited. He gave them a fig plant for their yard. Frank sent Kristen the Facebook invitation for an event called the “Fig Frolic” in Ooltewah on September 17.
Attendees are supposed to bring a fig plant to the Fig Frolic for a white elephant exchange. To reserve free tickets, Frank had to answer a questionnaire about his level of fig expertise. He chose “intermediate.” Frank is hoping to get a Violette de Bordeaux fig tree in the white elephant exchange.
Frank can’t figure out why his Brown Turkey fig trees are producing fruits of very different shapes, sizes, and colors. While picking figs this morning, a limb broke off in Frank’s hand. When that happens, he buries his mistakes. He cut the limb into about 15 cuttings and planted them in case one or two take root. Frank currently has 28 fig trees growing in his yard.
Kristen and Jeff are about to become empty-nesters when their daughter goes to college. Frank and his wife Jere have been empty-nesters for several years. They like it when Jere’s sister and her husband come to visit.
Frank asks if Kristen has any hobbies and is thrilled to learn that both Kristen and Jeff enjoy crossword puzzles. Kristen says she’s addicted to TikTok. They like to binge watch Jeopardy! by letting episodes accumulate on their DVR. Kristen has bad luck with plants but wants to do better. She puts googly eyes on her plants.
When Jere’s sister and her husband arrived for a visit they needed to fill their gas tank before going out to dinner. Jere suggested they all go to the supermarket to get discounted gas. They took three cars in order to share the discount. Frank realized they were wasting some of their discounted gas when they then took all three cars to Culver’s for dinner.
Frank likes the ButterBurgers at Culver’s so much that he started buttering his buns at home too. He plans to cook bison burgers with buttered buns when he goes glamping with the twins at Smoky Hollow Outdoor Resort in Sevierville. The twins are his cousins-once-removed Megan & Erin, who are singer-songwriters in Nashville.
When they got to Culver’s, a young boy asked Frank to sit with him and his mother. The boy said his name was Gianni and that he was four-years-old. Gianni’s mom talked on her phone the entire time. Frank thinks Gianni may have thought that Frank was alone and needed a friend. Jere thinks that Gianni may have thought Frank looked like Santa.

Frank Murphy’s friend Jody Collins is today’s co-host. He is the graphic designer who created the Frank & Friends Show logo. Jody’s design company is Feral Giant and can be found online at https://feralgiant.com/
When designing the F&FS logo, picked up on a Vegas in the Smokies theme. Jody enjoys seeing the logo on a beach towel. Frank paid for an extra file of the logo with enough pixels to use on the merchandise.
Frank will soon appear as a guest on Jody’s Ramblin’ Man podcast. Jody asked if Frank was okay with an open-ended conversation. When they recorded it, Frank stayed for five hours until Jody ushered him out.
Frank asks if Jody is often asked to do his work for free. Similarly, Frank is asked to emcee events for free. Jody has been on thirty non-profit boards. Frank wonders if he can get Jody to replace him on the Marble City Opera board but Kathryn Frady claims to want Frank on the board for life. Board members are expected to make a monetary donation to the charity.
Jody likes to smoke cigars with his guy friends. He says it’s forced relaxation with conversation. Frank rarely relaxes and has very few guy friends.
Frank used to think that cleaning the pool was relaxing like a zen garden. Recent rain storms made cleaning the pool more difficult. Frank’s wife Jere doesn’t want him using the 16½ foot aluminum pole to clean the pool during thunderstorms.
Jody loves sweets. His friends know of his love for Oreos. Frank is known for his love of Marshmallow Peeps. They both receive lots of memes and other links about their favorite treats from their friends.
Jody has tried many novelty flavors of Oreos. Frank asks what Jody thinks of pumpkin spice Oreos. Frank would rather have a pumpkin-pie flavored treat instead of a pumpkin-spice flavored treat.
Jody thinks Pop Rocks Oreos are a bad idea. There was a false rumor about Mikey from the Life cereal commercials dying from eating Pop Rocks. Frank and his classmates knew the rumor was false because the actor who played Mikey went to the same grammar school and they saw him everyday.
Frank wonders how Jody feels about Oreo-flavored things like ice cream and how he feels about deep-fried Oreos. Jody likes deep-fried Oreos but didn’t like deep-fried banana pudding.
In 2011, Frank recorded a YouTube video about deep-fried banana pudding at the Tennessee Valley Fair which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/Kw1xI6f52cI
Jody asks if Frank remembers the Oreo Big Stuf. It’s not the same as the Oreo cakester which is more like a cream-filled snack cake.
Jody learned about Carvel Ice Cream from listening to a Kevin Smith podcast. Frank’s father used to tell him about the original Carvel store on the site where Tom Carvel’s ice cream truck broke down. Frank once saw Tom Carvel in person at an ice-cream eating contest in Tuckahoe, New York.
Frank thinks that the molds for Carvel’s Fudgie the Whale and Cookie-Puss would be used for different designs by rotating the mold before decorating. Frank likes salted-caramel Blue Bell ice cream.
Jody made Oreo lasagna. The recipe is online. It consists of layers of crushed cookies and cream cheese. Frank tells Jody about the Elvis “hot dog” that is really a banana with peanut butter, marshmallow sauce, and chocolate syrup.
Frank asks if Jody has heard the famous Casey Kasem outtakes. Jody tells Frank about a recording of Paul Anka losing his temper and shouting, “The guys get shirts!” Frank sent the Casey Kasem blooper to a comedian friend whose dog had died.

Tuesday Aug 16, 2022

Frank Murphy’s friend Kathryn Frady is today’s co-host. Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge for her duties with Opéra Louisiane. Jody Collins will co-host the next episode of the Frank & Friends Show and Frank will appear as a guest on Jody’s Ramblin’ Man podcast.
Frank got AirPods for his birthday and is afraid of losing them. One pops out of his ear when he bends over while doing yard work. There is an AirPods case for sale in our merch store.
Frank missed a call from his daughter. He called back at an inopportune time because his two-year-old granddaughter was fussing. When she heard that pop-pa was on the phone, she stopped crying.
Artie Rocket usually visits during June. Next year Frank wants him to visit during August. That way he can be on a swim team in June and July and help Frank harvest figs in August.
Frank is wearing the last of the ten shirts he bought at an estate sale. The shirt belonged to Cecil Edward Mannis, father of Eddie Mannis. Most of the shirts were blue or red. One was yellow. Frank’s friend Jeff Detrow made a good joke about one of the red shirts. He said a Bob Evans restaurant was missing its table cloth.
Kathryn asks if Frank ever wears black. He did when they appeared on East Tennessee PBS during pledge breaks in the Brit Floyd: Space & Time - Live in Amsterdam broadcast.
Frank and Kathryn went to a screening of Marble City Opera’s production of Tosca at Central Cinema. Kathryn played the title role. Frank and Kathryn introduced each act of the opera. Kathryn took a photo of herself and Frank on the big screen.
Frank gave Kristen and Jeff Detrow a fig plant. They sent him a photo of the plant in their yard. Frank called it his “grand-fig.” Kathryn suggests that Frank set up a stand in his yard to sell fig cuttings and fresh figs.
Frank has been president of two non-profit boards. He recently turned down a request that he volunteer to be on a fund-raising committee. When he had a salaried job, it was easier to donate time to charities. Now that he is in the gig economy, he needs to get paid for his time.
Frank did agree to emcee Marble City Opera’s fundraiser for free. He is on the Marble City Opera board. Kathryn jokes she is going to rewrite the by-laws to make Frank a board member for life.
Most of Frank’s friends are women. Kathryn was glad that he had some male co-hosts over the past two months including Tim Coleman and Frank Rosamond. Kathryn asks if Frank will have to adjust the camera when Jody Collins is here. Jody’s graphic design company is called Feral Giant.
Frank’s friend Bean suggested that Frank start a spin-off podcast about figs and Kathryn agrees. You can occasionally buy fresh figs at Publix in Knoxville. Frank says many places in the Hamptons sell fresh figs. Kathryn says Frank’s figs are flavorful.
Kathryn likes being able to conduct meetings on Zoom. Frank gets frustrated by people who have too much background noise and those who forget to unmute their microphone on Zoom calls.
Frank and Bean broadcast live from the top floor of the Washington Monument during Hands Across America on May 25, 1986.
Frank ran out of cherry Luden’s throat drops. He has some licorice flavored Luden’s which could be a bad surprise if he gave one to someone who was coughing in church or at a concert.

Thursday Aug 11, 2022

Frank Murphy’s friend Kathryn Frady is today’s co-host. Kathryn has been traveling to South Carolina and Louisiana for her opera career.
A man showed up at an opera venue to tell Kathryn he wrote an angry email to her but decided not to send it. Frank got an anonymous complaint on the Titanic video.
After starring in The Copper Queen in Knoxville, Kathryn went to Baton Rouge in time for Opéra Louisiane’s production of Tales of Hoffman. She is the new General Director of the company. On opening day, Kathryn was interviewed on live TV at 8:30 a.m. Then she and her husband moved some of her stuff into their apartment.
Frank thinks that Kathryn has a “tell.” He says her foot moves when she is uncomfortable or stressed. He noticed it at a board meeting and when he interviewed her on TV. A compliment from Kathryn’s husband gave Frank some extra confidence to accept the offer of the interview show.
After the stressful meeting, Frank gave Kathryn a hug. She was glad he did. Frank explained the situation to a man who didn’t seem to understand how the discussion at the meeting had become personal instead of professional.
Kathryn has been experiencing déjà vu. Her husband thinks she may need to get it checked. She directed three performances of Carmen in Myrtle Beach. After one of the shows, she walked around a corner and got déjà vu when she saw the singer playing Micaëla. She also got déjà vu when she was on a beach vacation with her family. Frank suggests Kathryn should create an opera about déjà vu.

Frank & Friends Show 0072

Frank Murphy’s friend Avi McCullah is today’s co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men’s watches.
Avi bought her shirt at T.J. Maxx on the way to the podcast. Frank saw an article titled “The TJ Maxx where Amber Heard was spotted shopping is actually a celebrity hot spot — and a Hamptons secret gem.”
Avi will visit T.J. Maxx when she is traveling. Frank admits doing the same thing at Kohl’s. It’s easier to find orange clothing outside of Knoxville. Avi has purchased orange jewelry out of town. Frank says that UT orange (PMS 151) helps you blend in like camouflage in East Tennessee.
Avi left the tags on the shirt in case she decides not to keep it. Frank tried on shirts at a grocery store with a clothing department and started to sweat when his size was too tight. At other stores, the same size might be too loose.
Frank broke a chair onstage by bouncing on it during an Einstein Simplified show. Audience member Heather took a picture at the moment that Frank realized the seat of the chair had cracked.
As a kid Frank disliked posing for photos. A local bank had a promotion offering families a chance to pose for a portrait in the bank’s lobby. Frank got upset at how he looked. His discomfort was visible in the photo. He stormed off and walked two miles home rather than ride with his parents and sisters.
Avi was allowed to play outside unsupervised until sundown. In Frank’s childhood neighborhood, one of the moms would ring a bell when it was time for her kids to come home. Other moms told their kids to come home when the streetlights came on.
Avi and her mom enjoy visiting museums in Washington, DC. Frank goes to the DC suburbs so often that it doesn’t occur to him to go downtown. Avi also likes playing tourist in Knoxville. She has several favorite restaurants.
Avi likes to go to Curious Dog Hotdogs & Sandwiches in downtown Knoxville. Frank thought the spicy mustard and sauerkraut dog at D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream reminded him of New York. Avi says Brazilians put mashed potatoes and potato sticks on their hot dogs. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Frank would not have known to put coleslaw on a barbeque sandwich.
Frank only wants to eat Peruvian chicken when he’s in the DC area. He would rather find a local restaurant than a national chain. He likes to eat at Three Li'l Pigs Barbeque in Daleville, Virginia, when traveling along I-81. Avi likes supporting local businesses and their entrepreneurial spirit.
When Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner before going to see Bright Star in Morristown. They ordered veal parmesan at The Little Dutch Restaurant, which has been there since 1939.
Avi recommends that Frank and Jere make an excursion to Chattanooga. She goes there often to visit the “medieval barber,” the guy she is dating.
Avi suggests Frank take a Myers–Briggs personality test online. Her type is found in only 1.7% of women. Frank gets paralysis by analysis when trying to think up a new password for a website.
